Covid

Toddler with high temp but not left the house

Sorry if this is a stupid question..I've been up all night..

My DD has a high temp - no thermometer but very hot to touch. Seems to be a little more breathless than normal but certainly not struggling to breathe.

I'll call 111 as NHS online recommends, but I wonder how likely it is that it is covid? Not left the house since 13 March. We have been getting food delivered as DH vulnerable, so I sort it carefully and clean up afterwards. Last food delivery was well over 2 weeks ago.

I understand it MAY be covid, but just trying to get some perspective, If it is it will have come in through the food delivery. But if it is something else I don't know how another bug would have been picked up?

Sorry for the ramble just trying to think straight on lack on sleep!

Your GP practice will have a plan in place for how to deal with patients. Ours for example telephone screens everyone (GP phone call) and then if you’re unlikely to be covid can be seen in person in the practice. If there’s a chance it could be covid you’re seen at the hospital instead. DS has been prescribed antibiotics twice over the phone since Covid started entirely based on my description of his symptoms. Threshold for treatment is lower (and rightly so)

My daughter used to get UTIs. It sounds the same. Eventually we bought a tub of urine test strips ourselves. We used to bribe her to sit on potty for wee, and then test ourselves and ring doctor if positive. It also quickly ruled out UTI.

@MBM18 my DD is sick with a temp regardless of what it is, once she gets hot she is just sick especially if she gets worked up crying. I think if the calpol is working that is a good sign, they say with bacterial infections and other very serious things calpol doesn't bring temp down or help at all.

I think I will risk it tomorrow!

Glad your DD was a bit better this morning.
Do take her to the doctors appointment if you are concerned, I'm sure they're sticking to the social distancing rules etc as best they can.

DD is ok once the calpol kicks in, but not so great once it starts wearing off. She hasn't ate much again today, although more than yesterday, and had shakey legs before she went to bed. Someone I spoke to today said the vomiting last night could have been from the fever where she was so hot, not sure though?

No rash but that's interesting to know. I think it is worth taking her you are right. Thank you!

Any sign of a rash op? New virus that isn't proven to be connected to cv but presents as Kawasaki (spelling?).. In my news feed with 'children and coronavirus' ...

I’m taking my 11 month old to have his MMR next week. Children are much more at risk of other childhood illnesses than they are of COVID in my view.

If your instinct is telling you she needs to be seen I really wouldn’t hesitate to take her to the GP.

Has anyone been to the GP since lockdown? Is it really risky or do you think the benefits outweigh the risk?

@MBM18 that sounds worrying - how is she today?

DD is hot this morning but much brighter and actually running round! She looks awful and only wants mummy so feeling guilty for nipping off for a shower and being on the phone to the dr. She is dribbling a lot today but the dr said it may be a throat infection.

What is really hard I think for all of us is that it's not a normal situation..you can't just pop to the gp and have them look in ears/throat etc. it's all at an additional risk. The surgery have said to bring her in tomorrow if she still has a temp then they will make an assessment for antibiotics and a&e if condition worsens. The good thing I guess is that they said they wouldn't give antibiotics on the first day of symptoms anyway unless it was something very obvious so no harm hopefully in leaving it until tomorrow.

@picklemewalnuts that's interesting, I found the fresh air helped and the change of scenery just to go in the car!

I am still suspicious of a UTI, she had one when she was very little and they treated her case as sepsis when we first went in, she had similar symptoms but couldn't keep any fluid down so maybe worse. This time was worrying because she couldn't physically walk so massive relief she is running round today

We had a run of croup, and a couple of bouts of suspected meningitis.

We found that going out into the cool night air seemed to miraculously perk up a child with croup, and a trip to hospital perked up the 'meningitis' child.

We'd been seen by the GP who found us waiting in the car park for the surgery to open. She took us in and rang to get us admitted, as he was droopy, had some of the non blanching spots, and very hot. As soon as we got to the fascinating hospital he perked up and trotted off down the ward.

How was she last night OP?
My 20 month old DD is very similar. She's had a slight cough for a month now, at first it was mainly at night but sometimes in the day time too but never more than 2 coughs at a time and probably no more than 5 times a day.
Yesterday, her temp was 38.1, she hardly ate, lazed on the sofa most of the day when she wasn't asleep, thought she may be teething. I gave her calpol before bed and she was sick in her cot around 1:30am and still had a temp. She's hardly ever sick so now I'm starting to get worried thinking of these new symptoms in children that they think are linked to corona virus, went on the NHS website reading symptoms of toxic shock syndrome and she has a few of the symptoms so called 111 and a Dr called me back and said if she's sick again to call my GP in the morning but obviously if she gets worse during the night to call them back, she also advised not to give calpol unless temp is 38.5 or over.
DD stirred a lot during the night on and off crying, took her temp this morning and it's now 39.1. She was very unsteady on her feet also when she woke up, her legs seemed to be shaking like they couldn't support her but now she's been awake nearly an hour and had some calpol, she seems to have perked up a bit. Will see how she goes today.

In normal times I would be checking her armpits for first chicken pox spots...

Skin to skin works on all children not just babies I always get mine to sleep on DH or my bare arm/chest to help them regulate their temperatures. (Even just their sweaty wee head on my arm helps)

I hope the chocolate buttons continue to help Wink

My DD gets like that when she's got a UTI, doesn't want to eat or drink much, very tired/sleepy/cuddly and extremely high temps, hers has been above 40 before with a UTI.
Not to be alarmist but the last time she had one we ended up on the children's ward for 3 days so they could monitor her temp and heart rate while the antibiotics kicked in as they were worried about her and wouldn't send us home until both had stabilised.
Honestly I'd take her to A&E and insist on a urine test. Drs NEVER believe me that it's a UTI but I always insist on waiting until we can get a urine sample out of her and it always tests positive, we've had it maybe 3 or 4 times.
I'd take her in if she still has a temp in the morning xx

If you can’t get her temperature down on maximum medication after 24 hours I’d go to a&e

oh christ! Floppy! That's horrible, but so weird how they do perk up. I'm fully prepared for her to go up and down too. I'd offered her every treat under the sun (or the roof due to current restrictions) and she was having none of it before.

LOL my kids used to do that when they were toddlers. JUST when I had made the decision to go to A&E they would bounce right back.

Hope she is on the mend OP.

Ah glad she has perked up. Bloody kids. I remember once my DS aged 2 had a really high temp, then suddenly went white as a sheet and all floppy. I rushed him to A&E in hysterics thinking he had meningitis or something and the minute we got there he completely perked up. When the doctor came to see us the little bugger was running up and down and dancing!!

Well she slept some more, woke up and was lethargic and hot, wouldn't walk and couldn't keep her head up. So I called a&e to see what they would suggest and whether she would just be put on Covid ward due to her temp even though Dr said it was likely some other virus/ear infection/water infection etc.

I then packed a bag, put her in the car and she said "take choc choc to granny" so I played along and said ok shall we take some choc choc to granny, gave her a pack of open buttons, she ate 5 then perked up like you wouldn't believe. Still a bit hot but she's eaten some banana, cheese and plenty of fluids!

I did think about the ibuprofen on empty stomach, but thank you for letting me know, really appreciate everyone's help. The gp said it was fine to give her some if it meant her temp wasn't at a dangerous level and just keep pushing the fluid.

It was scary because I've not seen her like this before and she kept saying it's hurting and just crying when she moved and she got so bloody hot.

Bag is packed ready just in case we need to go as I know things can change rapidly, she is still very hot but her behaviour is so much better.

I can't thank you all enough for replies.

Happened with my toddler last week... high temperature for 3 days and then spots emerged on chest and back... GP confirmed it's chicken pox! Still don't know how DS got it as he's been home all this time.

Hoping your DD gets better soon.

Hope she improves soon @PapercraftNinja.

It’s not recommended to give ibuprofen on an empty tummy. I think calpol is ok but I’m sure I was told not to give ibuprofen if they aren’t eating or drinking.
