Are you cleaning your shopping? Cans & packets etc? And what about your post?

Nope and no wonder i can't get any dettol wipes for my sides as loads seem to be using to clean there food .
Would concern me washing all my food stuff in bleach as well. We wash hands when we come in , wash hands before eating and keep surfaces regularly cleaned but I can't get round to cleaning the shopping or quarantining the post , just open it, dispose of envelopes and wash hands

Had a delivery last night (after waiting 3 weeks for a slot!!). Hubby said to wash everything, but then he even kicked up a fuss when I asked him to mow the tiny piece of front lawn as he was concerned about people spitting on it, and then having to disinfect the mower.. ok, he's got a point but..), so anyway I had a sink full of fruit and veg washed, but then I just took most contents out of boxes, and stuck things like butter, cheese etc., in the fridge without washing. Afterwards, bleached the tops, and washed my hands. It took almost an hour. Some stuff got washed, some stuff didn't. I don't do post.

No . Live in a shared house. We all share a fridge so probably multiple times I could could get infected.
We are still working as well so we are all exposed every day

Scientists says that the virus is fragile outside the body so there is some debate about it would linger on objects in high enough quantities to actually be transmitted. Obviously if somebody coughed on their hand then opened a door and you touched it a few minutes later then there is a high chance of transmission. I'm not washing my shopping but I am taking precautions.

Under ordinary circumstances you’d call someone mental for washing their shopping. But when there’s a virus that could kill you that can live on surfaces for 72 hours it’s hardly mental to do something that gets rid of it! Quite the opposite!

Post doesn't really worry me because you only handle it in one brief action, it's easy to then put in a folder (or pile!) and use gloves or wash hands after. You don't usually need to access it for a long period during which you might touch your face or to access it on and off throughout the day.

There lot of contradictory advice out there. I watched one of the experts on who said theres no need to wash ur shopping or mail. Just remove as much of the outer packaging as possible and bin then wash hands and surfaces thoroughly. Sometimes I leave parcels for a few hours after they're delivered

Maybe you should but just lack insight.

No but DH is a keyworker so still out and about as normal so if we get it it’ll be from him.

I think they talked about this on this morning and the ratio was one cap to 1l I think you have used far too much bleach. As long as you throughly rinsed the package it should be fine though.

Sodium hypochlorite solution is used to wash prepackaged salad and to disinfect baby bottles. I’m happy rinsing my fruit & veg in it then rinsing with water.

Up to you but bleach is not used in professional food preparation environments, presumably there’s a reason for that.

I’m sure you’ll be fine @DandelionsDandelions but personally I wouldn’t have bleach near anything food related. If you must wipe things down I wouldn’t use bleach next time.

@WiseUpJanetWeiss Thank you so much for reassuring me. I put about 4 capfuls in a litre of water. Will look up the proper ratio next time.

Bleach is not poisonous when diluted - it’s used industrially to wash prepackaged salad and for disinfecting drinking water and babies’ bottles. Also, have you never been to the swimming baths?

You will be fine, don’t panic. Flowers

So I washed all my shopping in bleach solution this afternoon, just the packaging, and now I'm terrified I'm going to poison us. Can't afford more shopping.

What can I do??
Can the bleach get through packaging like light plastic??

Be gentle please I have anxiety disorder, usually well controlled but just now through the roof

I have taken the advice from one of the BBC Coronavirus programmes that post should be left for 48 hours, all cardboard too. Any shopping that has virus on the packaging will survive in the fridge and freezer (not the oven). I don't have a garage or somewhere to leave shopping. So I do dettol wipe everything. Soap and water is just as effective but takes longer. If that seems 'mental', so be it. It is a pain and takes time. It's worth the effort to me. But then again there are plenty of people who take risks every day that I wouldn't since lockdown. My choice. I do what helps me to feel there are things I can do to manage down risk in this situation. Others reportedly choose to ride the bus 4 times a day because they refuse to be told they shouldn't. We have different coping mechanisms that's all.
