Just that really - anyone started taking vitamins to try give their immune system a boost?

I've seen some news articles saying other countries been treating it with vitamin c and d .

Just to add, I'm in no way that it's a cure and there's no evidence it works, for me I just feel like I have to do something 🤷‍♀️

I've taken vitamin b, c and d for years, but not every day. Since January I've been making sure I take them every other day at least.

I take D, C and iron anyway. The C to help the iron work. But I couldn't get C so now it's a multi vitamin, one of those soluble ones, so I'm drinking more too.

Zinc is good for your immune system op. But I've heard it's not good to take it all the time, more as a booster every now and again. I don't know how true that is. A lot of vitamin c tablets come with zinc.

Magnesium I do take occasionally, I was advised to take it for arthritis. I think it's supposed to help with inflammation.

Vitamin k2 I've never heard of. Is this something we are usually deficient of ?

Can you buy in Tesco etc or better off buying online?

I read two recently released academic articles about vitamin D. The authors of one were recommending between 25 and 50 micrograms a day to be provided for elderly, frontline staff and vulnerable people in an effort . Vitamin D deficiency can exacerbate symptoms. Once you hit 50, you become less efficient at absorbing vitamin D.

K2 I've only heard of recently on another thread. I think it helps to absorb vitamin d properly. I've never taken it. Apparently it's in cheese, egg (yolks I think) and a few other things.

Vit D3 is the natural form your body makes from the sun. I believe studies have shown this is the most effective one.

You'd have to google K2 + D3 as it's too long winded to explain.

I’d say most people in modern industrial societies are deficient/insufficient in K2. It’s necessary for the correct metabolism of D3 and calcium, so that you have strong, straight and healthy teeth and good bone structure, and that vascular tissue doesn’t have calcified plaque deposits that cause circulatory disease. Eating processed foods like sugar and flour based processed foods diminishes it (or at least displaces foods which are good sources of it), whereas eating unfashionable traditional animal rich foods are good sources, like proper butter, red meat, offal, liver pate, marrow bones, plentiful eggs, high fat cheese etc. Probably goes a good way the explaining the “French paradox” whose diet is high in purportedly bad saturated fat, yet lower levels of heart disease.

Anyway, either get a D3 which includes K2, or include lots of cheese (esp gouda), pate, full fat grass fed dairy etc in your meals.

I genuinely believe that the very best thing you can do for your immune health is to cut out ALL refined carbohydrate and sugar. They literally inflame your body (i.e. the body views them as a threat)

All the vitamin supplements in the world won’t help if your body has constant low level inflammation

Ive been on vitamin d for a few years but have now started dh on it everyday and I am having the fizzy vit c too and multi vitamins for the older dds and have ordered kids vitamins for dd9 (been very difficult to get hold of) but she’s a fussy eater so hopefully it will boost her system

no, because we were taking vit d3 & magnesium already.
I am also taking iron as I tend to get deficient if I don't.

DS and I have both started taking a multivitamin but it's more to do with lack of sunlight as we have no garden.

The dose of vitamin D in standard multivitamins can sometimes be really low

You need at least 4000IU in the winter

I already take D3 and B12 sprays and vitamin C tablets Also take Galfut syrup as I have low iron

I have a multivitamin with minerals so I’ve got my iron (anemic is but can’t tolerate high levels very well) and my zinc which I’ve read is important

I’ve started taking Berocca again, not solely due to CV but partly. I used to take it anyway then stopped but managed to get a really good deal in Costco so I’m taking it every day when I remember.

It is my understanding that taking k2 in addition to d3 directs calcium to your bones, reducing that which would calcify/accumulate in your blood vessels or kidneys.

Vitamin D. I’m interested in the theory that it may be the difference between black and white Covid deaths in America. Apparently it is UK Government advice to take this during our winter months. It’s made a lot of difference to how I feel.

@toseland what theory is that?

I've ordered high dose d3 4000iu with k2 combined so should be here next few days

The poster who said all these vitamins are practically useless unless you are eating a generally non-inflammatory diet is spot on.

If you are truly wanting to increase immune function, you need to be eliminating sugar and processed foods and grains from your diet. And eating plenty of vegetables, fruit, fish, meats, beans etc. Food in its natural original form. Popping a pill is too simplistic. A lot of today’s big killers, cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc are often down to inflammation. Which is hugely linked to inflammatory foods (Google that for more information).

I’m all for supplements. I take many of the ones posters are commonly mentioning, but you have to look at health holistically.

Stress is inflammatory too so take your supps alongside your stress relief strategies folks too. Stay safe and healthy everyone.
