Covid

I think we all need to get a grip.

I know Coronavirus is scary, the constant media scaremongering hasn’t helped either. But let’s get this into perspective, the majority of us will be fine and whilst those of us who fall into the at risk category are anxious it’s still important to realise that there is still a good chance we can recover from this.
But the food stockpiling, sending your kids to school when you know you shouldn’t (yes I know people have financial obligations but if you are really worried about Coronavirus then surely the health of your kids comes first). The threads on MN are sounding pretty hysterical and we aren’t helping each other instead we are creating group hysteria.

Step away from the phone and just calm down and get some perspective. We can’t control this, just have to keep going.

@inlawsimnotsure I am, as it were, reporting from the coal face, not from media reports.

You are more than welcome to dismiss what I am saying. Feel free to bury your head in the sand and think this isn't really happening.

And no. I haven't panic bought. I don't have the time to panic buy. But, again, if it makes you happier to think I am a panic buying prepper who is making this up, you carry right on.

@wikkitikkiwoo has the government ordered new ventilators from china? china is sending france a million face masks and other equipment, italy has ordered 5000 ventilators and germany 10000 and so on. Is this happening? Lead in time for a new ventilator is 1 or 2 weeks (depending). There are different grades of ventilator and different costs. The government was talking about uk manufacturers "making" ventilators - why when they order from existing manufacturers who have equipment and existing expertise? How does the whole pfi contracting out thing work in this sort of situation, who is in charge?

you may not be able to answer those questions, online, I realise that. don't say anything you aren't comfortable with.

@WikkiTikkiWoo I completely believe what you’ve said, we were warned this would happen very fast by medics in Italy. I would assume some form of lockdown/closures of everything is coming soon too if you’re right.

Marsha i think that it’s important for everyone to slow down, take stock and look at what we actually do know rather than the hugely emotive media output. We know that people die every year in certain numbers from certain conditions. Governments prepare for this via their health systems. We need to work out what the numbers are telling us. Today’s DM death rate figure of 3.9% for this particular virus, for example, is not helpful because it is unlikely to incorporate non-documented cases. That has huge implications because if it did, it would reduce the death rate for Covid19 to ordinary flu levels. We just don’t know - yet. Let’s keep being sensible, taking precautions, and number crunching.

@WikkiTikkiWoo

'ICU beds across the country are full. Ventilated ICU beds are at capacity in London. There is currently no where to put CV patients needing ventilation in London.

You know the reports from Italy where Doctors were having to basically leave patients to die - if you have a pre existing condition, you will go to the back of the line for ventilated beds compared to someone without a pre-existing condition.

This happening now in London. It will be happening across the country in the next few days'

again how do you KNOW this? you sound like you are enjoying the drama of it all. Yes, it's scary, yes we can all do our part but not panic buying (I bet you do) and stay inside.

But sharing information that is not fact (and if it is fact, please do send me the details of the new outlet I can find it on) helps no one.

@WikkiTikkiWoo how do you know that? YOU are scaremongering - how on earth would you know something that the media doesn't? Or the rest of the general population doesn't.

I did not post a link.

But you posted the link Bluntness, and in your post about the link, seemed to be saying it was a cure. It's not. It's a lemsip. Which when you feel shit, is great. But it didn't stop you getting that cold did it?

It's good news there is a drug being trialled that will shorten symptoms. Of course it is. As I said, they're trialling an arthritis drug in Italy that appears to have an effect as well. Great again.

but when the government in question suggests herd immunity with no vaccine as a way of managing the situation

Please keep up. This position. Clearly suggested by the chief medical officer, was reversed within forty eight hours. If you hadn’t noticed, schools are on shut down, people have been told to work from home, people have been told to socially isolate. They are no longer going for herd immunity, this is fast moving. Try to keep up.

The whole problem stems from the belief that nothing is being done so you have to take the lockdown and stockpiling into your own hands

A fundamental misunderstanding of what is actually happening before our eyes. People are not taking responsibility for lockdown. Town is still busy, coffee shops are still full. People are taking too much responsibility for stockpiling. Combined, this means the infection is spreading and people are going without supplies.

How can these two opposing responses be explained by people thinking that not enough is being done? It only explains that when push comes to shove, many will serve themselves at the expense of others.

Suggestions from the government aren't enough. We need telling, and we need things enforced.

Bluntness when do you think we’ll start to use them here?

Report
Bluntness100 · 20/03/2020 11:06

The article says the drug being trialled shortens the time people moderately affected are unwell.

Why do people post things like this? Yes this is the result of one drug, the drug the uk and states are trialling clears up it seems those in the second advanced stage, there is not one drug being tested, there are many,

In fact at last count there were nearly seventy different treatments and vaccines globally moving to human trial.

I don't think MN needs to get a grip and I think telling people to 'keep going' will be construed as you telling people to live their lives as normal which they absolutely shouldn't be doing if they can avoid it.
This is a pandemic. The media aren't trying to terrify people. They are trying to use a nudge approach to encourage people to stay home, not panic buy, not clog up the NHS etc.
I'm not sure 'being patronising on social media' to posters who may have more knowledge and experience than you, is the great community service you think it is.

There are positives. China had no new cases yesterday.

And do we believe that, given this?

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/china-may-be-covering-up-scale-of-mystery-virus-say-uk-experts-7szq0j200

But, in the meantime, the truth is the truth. The UK is on a slightly faster and harder projectory than Italy if you look at the data. (yesterday's Telegraph had some useful graphs)

That is worrying, but like others said - there's nothing we can do but keep calm. Panicking doesn't help anybody.

Report
Jaxhog · 20/03/2020 11:00

I do think the media is enjoying all the doom and gloom, but as for underplaying the news - I don't think they are. I still don't think enough people are taking the situation seriously. There are still far too many people carrying on as if everything is normal. It isn't.

We need to be sensible regarding hoarding, and we need to be following the Government guidelines. This is a national emergency and we need to work together.

It’s perfectly possible to be concerned, sensible, to stay inside and not panic, etc. WITHOUT scaremongering, sharing rumours and misinformation, sobbing all day, talking about the end of the world, and so forth

This x a million.
