SCARED - multiple wisdom teeth removal

Hey,

I’m scheduled to have my teeth out in the next few months and as they are impacted with cysts I’m told part of my jaw with either be broken or have some of the bone removed.

I’m having 3 out of the 4 teeth removed. Has anyone had this done? How was the pain/swelling after?

You'll know when you get dry socket. Nothing seems to touch it painkiller wise x

I didn't have any other signs. Just unrelenting pain that wouldn't go even with pain killers they only took the edge off. It was constant throbbing.

Actually the biggest sign is pain that is suddenly worse a few days down the line. Because that's when the dry socket started, so the initial pains had worn off and then all of a sudden this started.

As soon as the dentist put the packing on though it went straight away. I can't stress that enough, don't let yourself suffer because it is so fixable.

I’m in a call centre too overdue I think that’s why my manager has agreed to 2 weeks off straight away before I’ve even got a sick note.

Is there any other signs apart from pain from dry socket dextro as that’s all I can really see online, and I’m so rubbish with pain I wouldn’t want to confuse normal pain for that if you know what I mean

I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed at the same time. Best. Thing. Ever.

The pain of infected wisdom teeth disappeared overnight. Healed ridiculously quickly and had a nice week off work recovering and eating loads or soup and mash potatoes.

Good luck for your op!

I also took 30/500 co-codomal every 4 hours for at least 3 weeks x

I had 3 out at the same time. Bottom left was impacted, 6 injections later it was out. Was frigging awful. I worked in a call centre at the time too. Had 2 weeks off then I got dry socket so back to the dentist for antibiotics, took 4 weeks to heal completely. Good luck x

I dont think it was, I was just in agony with dry socket because I didn't realise what it was for a few days. Never felt pain like it and I have had 3 children.

Thank you for the advice on the dry socket dextro was the swelling tender as well as your gums if that makes sense?

I bet that was quite a scary time really finding that out after the op.

I will get some of the strongest painkillers available over the counter stocked up ready for me been at home.

I had 3 out under GA a couple of years ago.

The GA made me sleepy for a few days. I had to keep pain killers topped up, they send me home with codeine and then I bought ibuprofen with codeine in over th counter.

I had to eat custard and jelly and cheesy egg mayo for about a week.

If you get a throbbing unrelenting pain afterwards that makes you count down the minutes to the next pill, get to the dentist straight away. It is not normal pain that will go on it's own, it is dry socket. The relief as soon as they pack it is instant so don't delay going.

This is my swelling straight after, it went down within a week.

jesus- my dentist told me yesterday I should have one of mine out- said it would be under a local anaesthetic and wouldn't be any trouble at all! Was he lying?! It's not impacted or anything though. I have dentists in the family- guess I should ask them!

I am also having GA so at least I won’t be able to see/hear what they are doing, I suppose that’s a bit of a silver lining

Sorry again for the late replies! Work and children have kept me busy! Thanks for taking the time to reply, the ones I am having removed are impacted and one of them has a cyst underneath so they have mentioned breaking/removing part of the jaw.

Work are giving me 2 weeks off so hopefully going by replies this will be enough time to heal. Partner has the day after my surgery off and then weekend then I am on my own from the Monday with 2 kids under 4 so I’m hoping I can get the pain under control in a couple of days.

I’ve read about dry socket, so I have stopped smoking this weekend gone to hopefully minimise my risk of getting it.

I had four out in one go. Gen anesthesia. Percocet after. Someone else drove me home afterwards. So long as you have pain meds and someone nearby to look in afterwards for a day or so & u will do fine

I remember that the pain killers sent me to sleep ! I've never slept so much, and had lots of liquid to keep me going. Oh and I ate the stitches accidentally!

I had all 4 of mine removed under GA about 20 years ago. I was pretty swollen afterwards had two black eyes and a very large incision from my lip to the back of my mouth.

First week was v sore and after that just got incrementally better.

My last memory is the hospital bringing me a cheese sandwich for lunch the next day- I couldn't open my mouth!

I am grateful I had them removed Under GA, my recovery was quick and uneventful.

I had all 4 of mine done at once. Getting over the GA took a few days and I was a bit sore and pretty swollen, but it didn't last more than a week/10 days. The bruising on my jaw took a while to fade.

Good luck OP!

I had this done. All four out and part of jaw. All fine and healed within 2 weeks.

I had mine out 2 weeks ago. They were impacted wisdom teeth and I was in more more pain after than I expected.
Nothing horrific but thought I’d be back at work 2 days later but actually needed a week off.

Oh sorry forgot to say, not much swelling at all. Far less than when infected. No visible bruising.

Try not to worry. I think they tell you the worst case scenario. They told me the same about time off work and broken jaw etc.

Had mine out under GA on a Fri. Discharged 2 hrs later! Pain far less than when they were infected. No jaw breaking but I had a stiff neck where presumably they had had to really pull to get them out (impacted). Sore nose from blood (like if you get water up your nose).

Anyway, bit woozy over the weekend. The mon was a bank holiday and I was back in on a tues. I was convinced I was going to die in surgery Hmm But honestly it was totally fine!

Best wishes to you x

I had all 4 out in hospital as lower 2 were impacted. Painkillers and a bit of soreness but I don't recall too much pain and only light bruising. Hope it goes well

@Bigpizzalover I had my bottom ones removed over a year ago. The pain was manageable for me, I took a week and a half off work due to swelling really. I just took ibuprofen for the week and codeine for the first few days, think I slept it off mostly.
