How can I support my sister through first IVF treatment?

My sister is about to undertake her first IVF treatment next month. How can I support her both physically and emotionally. We are very close and I know instinctively when she is having a bad day. I have researched the procedure but just wanted to ask anyone who has been through this milestone, what, if anything, I can do to help her. Thanks.

Oh Del Girl. So relieved to hear from you. Sis is on 9 weeks. Has been having some really bad back pain and during week it travelled to her abdomen and she was freaking out. But so far so good. Am so delighted for you. Looks like baby will be a charmer . Still keeping you in my prayers and understand you being hesitant. Sis is terrified to let herself go and enjoy pregnancy. Its such a pity. She has not made announcement yet until 12 weeks have passed. Lets hope next year will see arrival of two much cherished and longed for babies. Tlk soon. JB

Juicebomb I read this thread the weekdend before last and promised myself I would post after my scan which was last Tuesday. All is going well at the moment. I'll be 14 weeks on Thursday so well past my m/c's though still a bit nervous tbh. The baby is gorgeous, cute little nose and chubby little body, much like it's mum without the cuteness lol. The m/s has started to ease off now, just very tired alot of the time but that's ok.

Anyway, how are things going with your sister? She can't be far behind me.

Sorry I didn't post earlier x

Hi Hill. Sorry, in my haste to reply to you I realise now that your friend went through IVF. My sentiments remain the same; its so hard to say anything even though you want to throw your arms around her and comfort her. But she and her DH are in a very private place I guess and just being there for her is enough. Good luck. Hope she doesnt give up. JB

Greetings Hill. Its so difficult isn't it when you are watching your sis go through this process and, in your case, with a disappointing outcome. So far, my sis is doing well apart from some back ache which worries her. Every day and every week is a chance to sigh a breath of relief. I hope your sis will gather up her strength and move forward. Its such an awfully difficult thing to watch anyone go through. But she mustn't give up. Saw a programme recently where couple had four tries of IVF and then fell pregnant. They had a little girl and tried again and had twins. Thanks for responding to me. Good luck to your sister. She is blessed having you.

How is your sister doing, JB? I have just found this thread. I also have a friend who has just gone through her first IVF, and sadly did not get pregnant. I feel so so sorry for her and her husband, and I can;t even tell her.
Hope your sister had good news.

Hi Del Girl. Just wondering how you are cos its been a while. Everything ok I hope? My sis has scan next Tuesday. She is sooooo anxious. She just wont allow herself to get excited because she has been here before with disappointment. But this time, its gonna be different. Just like you eh? I hope you are keeping well and that the m/s is easing a little. Take care and God Bless.

Hi Del Girl. Just wondering, how many weeks are you ahead now? You must be dying to get to week 12. I always think thats a milestone really. Im continuing to think positive thoughts for you and keep you in my prayers. My sis is in wonderful form but is not saying much. I think she feels the more she talks about it, she might put a jinx on things. So she is saying nothing. Poor thing. But we are all terrifically thrilled for her. Roll on the weeks for both of you so we can get into Mothercare and do a bit of shopping!!!!

Hi Del Girl

Sorry to hear that you are suffering with m/s but they say thats a good sign with loads of pregnancy hormones flying about. Hope it passes soon but I would imagine you are prepared to take whatever is thrown at you as long as the pregnancy continues (which it will). Every day that passes with my sis is one to thankful for. She is in wonderful form but is terrified to jump for joy in case she is premature in her happiness. Its an awful way to be but, please God, when she has her 5 week scan on 12th Oct, she will see a little heart beat and perhaps relax somewhat. Its just a waiting game now.
All my love and best wishes to you DelGirl. When I pray for my sis, I include you as well. Onwards and upwards Girl. YOU WILL DO IT THIS TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Del Girl. Yahoo. Sis had BFP this morning. Have been thinking of you all day in tandem with sis. She is very nervous and terrified to get too excited because of previous mis x 2. However, we all have a very good feeling about this one. Oh please please let everything be ok for you and her. Hope you are remaining positive and that everything is going ok.

Only just seen this, sorry JB. Glad your sister has moved on a bit.. The injections aren't very pleasant though but hopefully it's all for the good. Keep us posted. Well, my last treatment worked. I'm pretty nervous at the moment but am 6+5 weeks so a bit further than the last time and feeling different too. Mainly due to constant m/s!! Still, if I have a healthy baby, I shall be on cloud nine with maybe my dh close by lol!

Hi DelGirl

Sorry I have been out of contact for a while. Have been concentrating on being with my sister. She has moved from spray to injections, just started those yesterday. She feels a wee bit tired and emotionally all over the place. We are just taking one day at a time. How are you doing? Any news? Hope you have some positive outcome.

Del Girl. Hope scan went well on Wednesday.
All geared up with my sis for beginning of August.
Fingers crossed for everyone.

Bakedbean. Thanks for your words of advice.
Yes, I absolutely agree its no one elses business and its traumatic enough to go through this process without Anne Robinson type interrogations to annoy you. Good luck to all IVF ladies. Hope you have strength and endurance.

Hi juicebomb! Have only just read this thread. You have had some great advice here! My DH and I only told our immediate family what we were going through and that really helped me as with friends and work colleagues we had to act like normal! I even had to make up a different reason for going for all the appointments, but I don't think my boss sussed! Even now, we have only told a couple of other people we had IVF. To be honest, it really is noone else's business and although some people were obviously dying to ask if we'd had any sort of treatement as they knew we'd been trying for so long, not one person did.

I really wish your sister lots of luck and I'm sure your support will be invaluable to her over the next couple of months, whatever the outcome.

Delgirl - hope you are well! Keep us informed as to how you are getting !!

Hi Del Girl. Glad to hear scan went well.
My sis starts her treatment beginning of August.
She is in good form, being positive and so on but is reluctant to talk about the process. So I leave her alone and take the lead from her.
Sprinkling of baby dust to you and my sis.
Lets hope this is beginning of something beautiful for both you and her. BFN.

Hi Juicebomb. Thank you so much for your supportive posts, they really do help. I'm well on the road now and have started my injections, yet again. A few people I work with have asked and keep apologising saying that they should know the routine by now, I've done it so often! 1st scan is tomorrow. Still a fair way to go though and will not know the outcome until the middle of August!

Hi Juicebomb. The scan went well thanks. Well, I thought so anyway. All is as it should be and I was quite impressed with myself . I've another scan on Wednesday unless I start to feel unfortable and should then get more of an idea of how things are progressing. I shall keep you posted, on this and the ivf thread.

How are you and sis?

DelGirl. Great to hear from you. You've been on my mind. My sis commences treatment beginning of August. So you are well on your way now and fingers are crossed for you. Im sure the process is very difficult, especially when you've been through it before. I guess the trick is to keep busy and remember that we only have one shot at life and try to make the most of each day, however difficult. Here I am waxing lyrical again. Cant help it. Take care and I'll be back on line again to see how you are doing.

Flumpette. Thanks so much for your messages of support. I have toyed with the idea of telling her to go on Mumsnet. She is fiercely private and Im not sure how she would feel about it.
Anway, yes, I agree that keeping the treatment a secret is a good idea because it can only add pressure on someone from family and friends who are trying to be supportive but who can, unintentionally, make a person feel on edge.
Again, thanks so much for your words of advice.
