Do pregnancy tests stop working after you're a certain amount of weeks?

Hi there, I was reading on the Internet that you can get a false negative if you've tested too late in your pregnancy because the tests only have a certain amount of HCG they pick up on.

How true is this? Thank you :)

It's ok. Still in a lot of pain, and bleeding heavy, I've been bleeding 5/6 days so I hope I don't bleed for much longer... kat, I really did want this baby. I now have an angel baby, which is better than none. X

Well sorry about not getting my facts wrong. I'm just going by when I experienced the same earlier this year.

And I'm terribly sorry to hear the news, I didn't read the thread l.

bertie, thanks for the telling off(!?) but I've actually been on this thread since the beginning.

jade, I will apologise to you though. It just irritated me that standing clearly hadn't read through the thread, both with her myths about the HCG dropping and to see how things sadly worked out for you. I hope you are doing as well as you can do today.

Guys, please read the thread before posting. Insensitive at the very least.

I was suggesting at the very least you'll get some fainting but definitely not a negatibe

Report
DinoSnores · 03/10/2014 13:13

That's really not the case, standing.

HCG levels are in the thousands from about 6 weeks and remain so throughout pregnancy. A pregnancy test should show a strong positive whenever urinary HCG levels are greater than 25!

Standinginline · 03/10/2014 13:09

Hcg decreases after about 7 weeks so you'll get a faint positive the later you are in your pregnancy but not a negative.

Oh no :( I'm sorry to read that. Hope you have someone around to look after you today.

Yes it was my scan today ladies. But, the bleeding was much heavier this morning at 5am when the cramps woke me, they were so bad I couldn't drive myself to the hospital and was losing blood clots. They scanned me within fifteen minutes of me getting there and told me I was miscarrying. I'm absolutely gutted.

Thank you girls... Out of curiosity I was feeling down on my lower stomach and my right side is a lot harder/bigger than my left. My left is quite squishy. Is this a good sign??

Also if you get should tip pain, prune colour bleeding or pain. Then go to A&E as ectopic pregnancies can give negative tests and fluctuating levels. You are not out of the danger zone for this possibility, so be careful .

I hope it us good news for you on Thursday.

I'm in Northamptonshire Kitty. I went to the doctors today on the advice of everyone on here, they managed to fit me in as a matter of urgency because I've begun spotting again... 3 days late of when my 'period' should be. And it's not even touching a pad, but I thought I'd go and see what he says. He's managed to fit me in for a scan first thing Thursday morning, but said if the bleeding gets heavier go to A&E and ring the EPU in the morning to see if they have any cancellations tomorrow, because tomorrow was fully booked. I told him my whole situation & because it's really light, he said its likely I still could be pregnant...!!! I said about Friday too, that I've got a scan booked, and he said he wanted me checked before then... So everything looks pretty positive (regardless of the bleeding)!

Whereabouts are you Jade? I know of three hospital EPUs in London that take walk-ins in the morning only. I've needed them in the past

Where is your scan booked in on Friday? I.e. is it at an EPU or similar? If it is, then I'd wait till then. It's only two days away.
Otherwise, if it is a GP Doctor's appointment, they won't have the facilities to scan you...
