Hi all

I had sex on day 22 of my very regular 28 day cycle - without protection as convinced it was a safe time. You can only conceive either before or within 24 hours of ovulation (so days 10-16 approx) right?

so, now my period is 5 days late. I have sore breasts and feel tired. Have done one clearblue digital yesterday evening, and 2 boots own tests this evening. All negative. Am I kidding myself? Could I be pregnant? I feel as if I am. With my other 3 DSs I did tests early which all came back immediately positive.

many thanks!

Keep testing every 3 or 4 days or so, once you get to 2/3 weeks late make docs appt. I conceived 3 days after date of ovulation in the summer, but it took 3 weeks to come up with a positive test. I unfortunatly MC at 10 weeks, but i'm proof to show it can take a while to get a positive result. In my opinion you either need to see a period or a positive test before you should relax (so to speak). x

To help you in future, you could use cervical mucus/position, opks or temping to help you chart. I'm sure you'll have an answer soon anyway :-)

No I don't chart. I feel pregnant but my brain tells me it's unlikely as we had sex only 6 days before my expected date of AF and i've done 3 neg tests. I suppose I'll just have to wait and will know one way or another soon-ish.

The 'average' luteal phase is 14 days but they vary wildly. You could have a gap of maybe 9-16 days between ov and AF arriving. Late ovulation is quite common, sometimes you can gear up for it but it doesn't happen so your body tries again. Do you chart your cycles to find out which day you ovulate?

ok thanks - it's just the waiting is killing me; so much has to change if I'm pregnant, including plans for a ramp up in career as last DS has just started school! I did tend to think the HPTs were v. accurate these days but maybe not.

Might be worth waiting a few more days and testing again. I didn't get a BFP with DS until 8 days after AF was due.

Is late ovulation a common thing? I've no idea! I thought if your cycle was 28 days you ovulated day 14? Many thanks! I recently turned 40 and a late baby would be lovely surprise although totally unplanned!

Or perhaps this month you ovulated late for some reason and so your period isn't actually late.

Hi. It depends on what day you ovulate - if you ovulated on day 21/22 then it's possible you are pregnant. Trying to avoid ovulation isn't a very reliable form of contraception! But you may not be pregnant; I would suggest seeing a doctor if your period doesn't appear soon.
