Gluten free christmas

First Christmas since going gluten free.

Main meal is fairly straightforward, just need a stuffing substitute.

Not sure what to do for desserts or alternatives to mince pies and things like that.

Any tried and tested suggestions?

Also, just a thought but some of the best Paleo websites have some very good recipes that are grain, and therefore gluten, free. Might be worth browsing these, which are some of my favourites:

www.thepaleomom.com/paleo-baked-goods

paleomg.com/category/treats/

www.theclothesmakethegirl.com/recipes-index/
and finally,
www.elanaspantry.com/

I'm not a big fan of anything ready made tbh, whether it's gluten free or not and my budget isn't a fan of M&S food Smile

M&S is your best buddy. My mum is coeliac. All their stuffings and most sausages are now GF. The Christmas cake is quite good. I made Nigellas rich choc flour free cake last year which was lush.

When you've had enough of being a domestic goddess (about 27th Dec round here) M&S GF salmon fishcakes make a quick light dinner.

Didn't know what bûche de noël was but turns out it's what i call squidgy log or chocolate roulade if i'm being posh. That's my chocolate option as no flour traditionally rather than being a poorer gf relation. Can also be made in advance and frozen quite well. Think i'm going to do that, individual white chocolate and raspberry cheesecakes and some sort of gf christmas pud (will be for more than one meal!)

I am watching this with interest, and my small offering to the table is Mrs Crimble's biscuits for cheese, they are highly addictive and any gluten free guests won't feel like they are missing out on the cheese course.

We have a bûche de noël which is flour-free. Just google for recipes and find one you like the look of - I tend to freestyle a bit so can't help much with specifics. Just remember to get gluten-free cocoa and you should be fine.

Also, remember not to coat roast potatoes in flour, or to thicken gravy with flour. I'm sure you would anyway, but my friend's dad forgot one year and she had a miserable Christmas lunch!

I use ground almonds istead of flour & this could be nice for mince pies

Fruit Pig Company are online butchers who do a wide range of gluten-free and lactose-free, rare breed pork stuff, and they do a Christmas range of stuffing and pigs in blankets (mmm) etc. We had a the full monty last year and it was absolutely gorg. www.fruitpigcompany.com

Pavlova, creme brûlée, that hazelnut meringue thing they made on GBBO was gluten free.

For starters, prawn bisque, smoked salmon and prawns.

Most supermarkets will have gluten free Xmas pud and mince pies.

Those crustlless quiche look great as a breakfast option. I eat breakfast at work so always looking out for portable food.

I get all my flours from here. There's a recipe on the back of the Doves farm rice flour for cheese straw type things, and their website has a good selection of recipes and a good search facility so you can choose specific gf recipes.

spring roll wrappers. That shop sell a fab range of flours and generally gf stuff too,

crustless quiche - you can make in mini muffin pan and with any filling you like.

I make crepes to Delias recipe with Doves Farm flour, and whizz it with a stick blender then leave for 20 min. Works beautifully

We have a great farm shop which does sausages that are gf free. We have a fairly non-standard dinner which is a mix between danish and english xmas dinner so don't have to be too traditional

We do a gluten free Christmas dinner. Waitrose do lovely chipolata sausages as part of their normal sausage range. As others have said, stuffing made with gf sausage meat (don't know what else as mum does it). We make a trifle with a gluten free sponge (doves flour) and fruit crumble with crumble made from gf flour and gf oats. Sainsburys win the prize for best gf mince pies. We have even made bread sauce in the past. Good luck with it.

I have done individual cheesecakes in ramekins with no base at all before.

I'm going to do a pavlova and a baileys and toblerone cheesecake for desert, maybe I'm being naive but hoping GF digestive type biscuits will work for the base?? My Mum is Coeliac so I try but don't have the day to day experience she has --hit and miss-- have bought mincemeat and hope to find a good GF pastry recipe so she can have mince pies too.

Mum loves Florentines which are naturally GF and fancy fudge too, this year I'm doing a salted caramel and pecan fudge.

I need to put some thought into the stuffing situation, previously I've just bought some and its not been GF but a good recipe would be fab.

Amazon sell 500g single packs of buckwheat flour, also some other interesting types of gluten free products.

I think amazon only sell it in large quantities. Not sure i need 5kg.

If ocado sell it do waitrose carry it in their stores?

Amazon sell buckwheat flour too.

If you are in an area that Ocado deliver to, they have a couple of different buckwheat flours. Lakeland do some gluten free cake and pudding, I've not tried the cake, but the pudding gets the thumbs up from my gluten free grandson.

M&S have GF Christmas puddings .

Report
ILikeBirds · 28/10/2013 13:10

No yorkshire puddings at Christmas in this house.

I've managed american style pancakes no problem but can't get crepes to work, they just fall apart. They're traditionally made with buckwheat so thought i'd try that but can't find it anywhere.

My Mum has coeliac disease and we make our own stuffing (3 kinds usually, as we love it). We use pork mince squished up (as cheaper and easier than finding gf sausage meat) and no flour, although cornflour would be ok if you wanted something to glue it together.

We do sage and onion, mushroom and bacon, pork and apple.....M&S do a lush cranberry & orange one if you need a back up option.

Good luck! Smile
