I am type 1. Have been since aged 1, for 35 years.
First of all, snack on way home ( my son needs one, aged 5, and he is NOT diabetic).
Plus what are her blood sugars at this time ? I bet she is low.
Anything else I can help with ? Please ask anything.
What time are you serving her dinner ?

Hi Valente

I am type 1 myself and I really feel for you and your daughter. It will take time to get it right as there is a lot to learn. It sounds like you could do with some extra support - could you contact the diabetic nurse and get help from the dietician. Have you been checking her actual blood sugar level regularly - I agree with Oblov in that my DD also needs a good carb snack after school and she isn't diabetic either. hope you can find some help.

I always need a piece of toast or a crumpet before i have my tea even though i'm on basal bolus..that's where i match my insulin to what i'm eating...not sure whether they'd consider that insulin regime for your DD if she's recently diagnosed but when i went onto it in my teens it was like i got my life back!..It does mean more injections but is so worth it!

If she was only dxd in march she could still be in the honeymoon? I think you def should speak to your diabetic nurse, they're usually really good

oh your poor love. My heart goes out to you. Makes me cross when I hear of someone not getting the support they need.
She could progress to a pen, then maybe a pump, like me.
how many blood tests are you doing ? please go back and get some support of the diabetic nurse. I know some lovely ones if you need someone to call.
It will get better. Life will never be the same, but it will be manageable. I still have hypos. But I don't have 'diabetic' tatooed on my forehead. when I tell people they say. 'oh, I never would have known' and I think well then thats a job well done !!
And let us help you too. Ask ANYTHING ?
why no carbs as home-from-school time ? I think that may be the very time she does need carbs.. But a couple of days of blood test at that time will tell you.
is she o.k. about the hypo? or is she upset ?

i agree with oblomov...it will honestly become second nature to her, and to you i guess..i have off days sometimes but most of the time i just lead a completely normal life...it's never stopped me doing anything..including parties, trips away with school, getting drunk, uni, childbirth....hang in there and let us know if there's anything we can do to help

I really feel for you and understand where you are coming from, my daughter is 8 yrs old, type 1 for 5 years and i can remember the months after diagnosis being just like you describe, constant worry about food and hypos. Things DO settle, in that you get used to what your daughter needs and when. Definitely speak to your diabetes specialist nurse at clinic asap, she will have some tips for you - also do you have a care plan in place at school? A guide school can follow, advising when your daughter needs a snack or what to do if she feels hypo? A great website & forum www.childrenwithdiabetesuk.org hope things pick up soon for you
