My daughters breathing rate is 50 . She's 3.5, has a cough and temp of 38.4. Doctor yesterdat thought it was viral. I'm concerned only because of her breathing rate, she seems ok otherwise, other than her cough which is sounding more chesty today. Any advice please?

Thanks,

Her chest seems quiet and there's no noisy breathing. Just a cough and rapid breathing , so no rattle or wherze....her temp has come down to 37.9 this eve too and she's started her antibiotics. She's been very alert and full of beans otherwise, I'll check her through the night to monitor her breathing.

They initially thought she might have asthma so gave her a blue inhaler through a spacer (small cylinder with a tiny 'mask' on the end). That slowed her breathing down.

They gave her a chest x-ray to make sure there was nothing else going on, which was when they spotted the pneumonia.

They carried on with the blue inhalers, and she had to carry on with those for about a week altogether when she came home.

She had an oxygen mask on to keep her oxygen levels up for the first day or so. They also gave her a course of antibiotics to fight the infection. There might have been two different ones but I can't honestly remember.

Good luck with your dd. Flowers

She's been given antibiotics for a suspected chest infection. Will monitor her breathing tomorrow. BertPuttocks-how did they treat your child for pneumonia in hospital?

I took my DD (then 3yrs old) to the GP with a similar breathing rate. She had no other obvious sign of illness other than a cough.

The doctor checked her oxygen levels and sent her straight to hospital, where she stayed for a couple of days. A chest x-ray showed that she had pneumonia.

I would phone the out of hours service and get her seen tonight.

Asthma? My DD1 first had asthma at 3.5 and she had much the same set of symptoms. Don't ignore breathing issues.... I would take her to the hospital.
