Can anyone please recommend me some authors/titles that I can get for DS1. He has inherited my bookworm gene, and is tearing through books faster than I can get hold of them. He has read all the usual suspects (Harry Potter's, Percy Jackson's, Anthony Horowitz's various, some classics although not overly impressed with them). If anyone can point me in a new direction, I'd be super grateful

Any Times subscribers out there- worth looking at their best books supplement. One is for kids of this age.

Had lots of these in mind too. What about Willard Price and Malcolm Savile (last one dated but still suspenseful).

Ok, ones that yr6 DS likes that haven't been mentioned.

Hunger games series (not to everyone's liking)

Earthfall by Mark Walden
Now about to try Hive series by Mark Walden

Tom Gates

Middle School series and I funny, I even funnier by James Patterson

He previously read all the beast quest books.

Plus lots of those already mentioned.

Thinking of stuff my similar age ds likes:

  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid series

  • anything by David Walliams. Ratburger, Demon Dentist, The Boy In The Dress, Mr Stink etc

Lots of great suggestions here. My ds liked the Jennings books , although they are dated. Had to explain the Latin references. How about The Machine Gunners by Robert Westall? Amazing book about second world war. Or Willard Price adventure books. Or The Boy with the Bronze Axe based on Scara Brae.

Depends how emotionally mature.

Agree Rosemary Sutcliff, all the Roman ones.
Hornblower, a bit dated but great. Go on to Maturin afterwards.
My side of the mountain

The good master, by Kate Seredy, and thd moving sequel about ww1 from the Hungarian side, the singing tree.

The Hobbit, then Lord if the Rings.

Again a bit dated, but the Roger Lancelyn Green retelling if the myths and saga of the norsemen and tales if ancient Rome, ancient Greece. A good grasp of myth will stand in good stead.

Gerald Durrell, birds beasts and relatives and my family and other animals. And all the others.

The longest journey.

Tarka the other.

Gavin Maxwell on his otter, can't recall the name of the book.

The silver sword

The dolphin crossing

A tale of two cities.

Silas Marner

The black tulip

The count of Monte Christo

Asimov short stories

The day of the triffids
The chrysalids

Agree holes. V funny.

Dahl's biography, boy

If he likes history, there are good abridged versions of Pepys'diaries.

Very stereo typed but coming back into fashion, Biggles. Not my thing....

Saki short stories

Phoenix by SF Said is amazingly good. It's spaceships/aliens for 9+. Utterly gripping.

Into the Woods is a perfect book for a ten year old boy. I*ve leant it out to boys from the age of 8-12 and they all seem to have loved it. It looks reasonably spooky but I'm told its a great tale? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/141365612936?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Artemis Fowl and Septimus Heap are ones my DS likes at the moment and he's read the ones you mention so worth a try. And Skullduggery as someoneelse has said - a huge hit with him and friends have ended up buying the last 2 in hard back as they didn't have them in the library!!

Michelle Paver - Wolf Brother, followed by lots of other Brother's. The first one is about a boy who befriends a wolf cub, set in the hunter-gatherer days. Some of it is told from the viewpoint of the wolf, which my DS absolutely LOVED.
