Childbirth

Is it possible to have an 'active birth' after first was an emergency c-section?

I've just had my 34 week consultant meeting at my hospital to discuss my labour for 2nd baby. He was very negative, spent first 5 minutes reading off statistics of how many 2nd pregnancies of previous c-section end up with ruptured wounds, how many of those babies then die, how I will need constant monitoring in second labour, how I can absolutely forget about a water birth and won't even be allowed to have a bath as I will have to spend 99% of the labout flat on my back to enable monitoring and I should definitely consider epidural asap (as his wife had epidurals with all 3 of her births????????).
To be honest, it's my idea of a total nightmare. My first labour was extremely active, I dilated to 10cms quite quickly, mostly using the hospital bath, was extremely active, no drugs, etc, and nearly gave birth standing up but my daughter just got stuck and I just couldn't get her out. Her heartbeat then dipped and so we ended up with an emergency c-section. The thought of this labour being almost strapped to a bed has thoroughly depressed me and I honestly don't know how I'm going to cope.
To be honest the care with this whole pregnancy has been crap. I'm 34 weeks and I've had just 3 ante-natal appointments, the hospital very much seems to have the attitude of we will worry about you when you come in during labour, I have no midwife attached to my GP surgery so my hospital is the only point of reference.
To the point (!!!!!!), has anyone else had an emergency c-section and then gone on to have a vaginal birth where they were still in control or active? I understand the need to be monitored but can I insist that I be upright when they do this (thought Mears or Leese could help me here??), even in the bath they do have underwater monitors could they not use this?
Sorry this is so long but I'm so upset and don't know who else to ask as the hospital just seemed to want me out of the doors asap and just kept saying 'let's see how it goes', I want to prepare myself if I can.
Thanks everyone.

Sainsbury's sells it as well! Probably Boots too. It's by Bach Flower Remedies

HI there, not sure whether Janus has been reassured (lots of messages here and am in a bit of a hurry) but if it's at all useful - I had emergency csection with first baby and then had second as VBAC in hospital, third as VBAC at home and fourth as VBAC at home without even midwife present (she was late). It's tricky one because in every case it comes down to why it was a section in the first place (mine was pre-eclampsia) but my recipe for making it work, for what it's worth, was staying out of hospital as long as pos and negotiating with them on the phone before I went in about length of time I'd have to be monitored (20 mins did it and then they agreed to push bed to side of room and not mention it again!). Good luck.

Well done Jojo... I've just been as a doula with a mum who was going for a VBAC.... and the MW was really (IMO) behind in her knowledge and care of "trials of scar" women.
The mum had to really get angry to be taken off the monitor (it is never good for a labouring woman to have to get that cross with staff when in labour!) and then everything else stayed as same old protocol (she was treated as a HIGH risk patient)... mum had another ceasarean

On the positive front: She is doing well and is very happy to have tried hard for her labour and her beliefs... and she did

pupuce could you explain what "trials of scar" means?
Thanks

Hi,

"Trial by scar" is the medical term used for any labour which is an attempted natural birth following csection. I only found this out 22 days ago when I was classed as this!

I am happy to report that I successfully delivered my daughter vaginally, although I did have a bit of help (ventouse) because she decided to stop where she was half way through and it ended up being a marathon 26 hour labour.

Yeah that's right... it's when you "try to see how the scar will fare"

Leese/Mears can we have the proper MW explanation????

I DID IT!!!!
After a few false starts I went into labour on Tuesday morning, arrived at the hospital almost fully dilated. Monitoring was a bit of a pain as meant for the second stage they wanted me on the bed and baby did get stuck (again!) so ended up having a forceps delivery.
However, no c-section, no need for pain relief as I still felt in some sort of control and gave birth to Rosie less than 3 hours of arriving at hospital. She's beautiful (of course!), feeding fantastically, sleeping very well, it's all going swimmingly!!! Lottie, her sister, is all over her, Dad's home for 2 weeks and we're all enjoying ourselves!
Had to let you know it can be done and I'm obviously chuffed to bits. Thanks everyone for your support in feeling I could do this.
