Camping

If you had booked and paid for a campsite for next week, but the forecast was bad would you go?

I guess the title says it all. We have booked and paid in full for a campsite that looks very nice for next week. However at the moment the forecast isn't great - an intoxicating combination of rain and clouds. Would you bother going or just forget it and stay at home?

Have just been to North Wales for a week - camping in Beddgelert in the middle of Snowdonia. It rained practically every day.

We still had a great time though, so yes, I'd still go.

When we used to go camping, every time we put it off because of bad weather forecasts the sun would shine, so we started to ignore them and go anyway.
We never had a holiday spoiled by rain, however "why does it always rain on me?' is known as 'the camping song', but it was usually only showers, nothing too drastic.

Just take cards and lots of board games and pen and paper, possibilites are endless. These holidays are what you make them, with or without weather.

I'm still going next week and i haven't even paid in full (just need a camping fix ). I've only paid a deposit
Rain is ok...it's wind that scares me
I would deffo go if i'd paid in full..and would lose the lot.
I've noticed a few sites demanding full payment up front lately.

Scanner... we stayed there last summer!! It's a lovely, basic site which is farmland off-season. My dd still talks about the playground... and it's an easy walk to the beach and several bars / restaurants on the main road. You must take a drive out to Putsborough beach - it was a tip given to us while there and we loved it. You pay a small entrance fee on to the beach but it is gorgeous. Hope you enjoy your trip and have dry nights .

Exactly MM!

You have to give it a try at least.

I would deffo go because we went to Anglesey a couple of weeks ago and the forecast was rain for the whole week.
We set up the tent in the rain but then the sun came out and stayed out for rest of week.
The forecast doesn't really mean a thing

You must go.

If you haven't been to Croyde you will love it. Even some peeps of sunshine will make it all worthwhile. Croyde is absolutely lovley.

You can always come home early if it turns out really awful. However, this is North Devon so the weather more or less does its own thing (good AND bad!)

I have jsut come back form 10 days camping and it rained most of the time night and day.

Would I do it agin

i guess so - the kids loved it. - they are 9 and above so could go off on their own
But be prepared with things to do - books to read. wellies/umbrellas/wetsutis etc

We are going camping next week. The weather looks grim. We've not booked or paid but we will go regardless.

I think it depends how far from home you are.

Yep we have a groundsheet and sewn in groundsheet ANd a carpet - mega luxury camping wise. Am keeping an eye on the weather forecast.

Go, love being in a tent in the rain!

I would go unless it was blowing a gale as we were setting off.

we've booked and paid, but it's caravan rather than tent so we are going regardless

expatinscotland · 05/08/2008 23:43

this is why i prefer a caravan to a tent.

have you got a good grounsheet and tent carpet for your living space?

Report
piratecat · 05/08/2008 23:40

bring lots of cosy jumpers, i swear it's wet. I am not trying to be horrible, but it's best to bring comforting things. I went camping down to Cornwall when it was raining and I have a bad back, and it felt quite damp. I bought a hot water bottle!!

Go - you can always come back early if it's no fun.

Escape plan is a good idea, also I think I should have a look at undercover days out. Our tent is huge and new so space isn't a problem, this will be our first camping trip with ehu too, which should make a difference.

i am in devon, its bloody pissing down. Altho i think the weather is meant to get better next week.

Ooh, we'll be in Devon too, scanner (though south).

I'd go, but have an escape plan if the wet is getting to you (e.g. go to a B&B for one night and if it doesn't improve just go home). But I think it's worth giving it a go. If the weather is wet, the aquarium in Plymouth is very good (though it might be a bit far from there). Or just check out the nearest local tea-shoppes and gorge on cream teas!

Good luck!

Well I would wait until day prior before making definitive decision (longer term forecasts less reliable than next 24-48 hour forecasts), but tbh if it was going to be wet all week then I would rather sell my own kidney than go camping
