Should I get a Cobb? Any offers on?

First post in camping! We're wanting to do more camping next year and have the kit we need but just a single ring burner. I always liked the look of the Cobb system, but is that the best one to get do you think? A quick scan of the board makes me think the weber BBQ is the 'mumsnet' camping cooker, is it similar?

I couldn't find any charcoal in home bargains but I suppose it's not really the right time of year!

You can use it to lift the grill plate off when you want to cook stuff in the Moat.

Enjoy :)

Sorry -didn't refresh!

Its to be able to lift stuff when it is hot - like the fire basket and the frying pan

I see. I did wonder why they didn't have handles in the pictures!

That's for when if you decide to buy the frying plate or griddle.

First question: what's the handle thing for?

It's arrived!!! I've excitedly ripped the packaging off and now have to try and put it back together to pack it in the bag. The lakeland one does come with the book, too.

Blu, you have almost ticked all the boxes for camp cooking bingo, but you are missing the essential
.......biolite stove lush bit of kit, that

We get by just with a cobb, storm kettle and single ring burner. Apart from when we go for longer trips to France with EHU and cheat with an electric kettle in the mornings

I'm back to wanting a Cobb, now. I would have all my cooking gear lined up:
Campfire grill
Go-Anywhere
Cobb
Gas stove.

Bit much, probably?

And I would like a tripod and a Dutch oven, and I still haven't got a pie iron.

No it doesn't give the BBQ flavour but some people add stuff to the cobb to get different flavours, that is a bit advanced for me.
Bog standard lemonade is fine, eg I have used sprite and tescos own brand, both fine, but with sugar in not the diet ones
You can make them in a normal oven too, just not so much fun

two questions:

Is there any bbq flavour off the food. I like the bbq flavour.

And the lemonade scones, is that fizzy lemonade or "proper" lemonade with lemons and sugar?

Sounds fab. And yes, I think pootling is probably unique (but fab!)

I've just ordered the roasting rack with the lakeland starter kit (bag but no book). We have a home bargains so I'll get some of that fuel for a start. Can't wait to have a trial run in the garden!

And I wasn't stalking, honest, but didn't think many people cook scones at the beach ;)

Respect prof for fitting 8 Cobblestones in! I think the most I've managed is 3 but I've tended to pack it with the basket in its chief position... I'll try your way next time. I think I got my heat beads from amazon. I think you can get good deals with free postage from bbq world but I didn't want to stock up on loads of them until I knew they were worth it.

Yippee jennimoo the Cobb is on its way! What accessories did you go for in the end? Wondered if that was you checking out that scones glad you approve!

We tend to light our small gas stove, place the lokkii on that in the fire basket and carefully lift out with tongs once alight. Some of the packs I have got from HB are initially smokier than others (and the proper cobblestones) but for the price I can live with that as I use my cobb much more.

Where is the best place to get heat beads from?

If you get a few accessories, packing them in the bag is more challenging but can be done. I place the base, invert the dome, then pack the griddle, roast rack, fry pan etc as these 'fit inside'. I then pack the wok last, upside down (with the fire basket containing a stone to the side) so the bag is flattish for packing other things on. My record is packing 8 cobblestones inside as well, by packing the firebasket up the top you can get 3 in a later elsewhere. Don't forget you can use the pan and wok on your gas stove but do watch the handles as DH broke one of ours

Same as pootling. Or heat beads when I need it to stay hot for longer than a couple of hours (like roasts).

And yes most definitely to clicky long lighter. Another to tip is to put a small sliver of firelighter underneath the basket where the fuel sits, light that then replace the fuel basket with fuel in. Virtually foolproof.

Thanks for the info. I shall keep a note of that list, very useful!

And do I get cobblestones , heat beads, normal charcoal or a mixture for different purposes? And would you recommend one of those clicky lighter things?
