Camping without a car?

My DS(5) loves camping, and so do I (DH will go along with it but not so keen), however, we don't own a car. Last year we did go for one night, to a campsite about 10 minutes up the road Blush, just so DS could say he had been that summer.

Does anyone have any experience/tips/ideas for getting around and camping without having our own car?

Is it ever done, or am I mad?

Thankyou for replies, I will have to do some research into campsites near train stations, I'm in Devon, and I really like Cornwall but public transport down this way is a bit hit and miss.....

In our local area glamping pods have just opened and they are really lovely.

We go camping via public transport and enjoy it immensely. (Even though i insist on taking a chair because of my bad back!!)

As an earlier poster said you have to plan, plan, plan. We also get everything out and then go through it to see if we can leave anything behind.

Go for it!!

This option will appeal more to your DH as there's no putting the tent up, some have heating and wigwams are just like wee cabins Smile

Or go to a site where you can hire the tent/yurt/wigwam at the site. More expensive, but massively cuts down on what you have to take.

We go via train. You have to pack carefully & lightly!

My parents are doing a week camping & walkng, carrying all their gear - they reckon they will be carrying 15kg each...

We go on the train, me and ds2. We have two of those tescos holdall things 50 litres or something. They are on wheels. Pack them with all camping gear and small tent llus a rucksack each. You re only doing actual carrying from bus to train then train to bus/taxi. Before i found these bags on wheels i used an old buggy or a shopping trolley.
Bit worried about this year as i have slipped a disc and fractured my back so no carrying anything.

Hi Could you get some sort of trolley to put bulky stuff on as well as backpacks. And find a nice campsite near train station.

Is hiring a car expensive? The thing is DH can't drive, I can but I hate it more than anything else in the whole wide world.........

Train sounds like a good option, it's only the 3 of us and we don't need much stuff.

My dad took us all camping every year, on the train. It was my mum's weekend to herself. You just have to be very organised and plan carefully in regards to where you go and what equipment you take.

I should add at this point that I am one of four. When we got older he took us to camping to Italy, again on the train. We did two overnights on trains to get to Venice!

We hire a car, can you do that?
