Infant feeding

9 month old biting nipple and only wanting to feed on one side - teething or self-weaning?

For over a week now, DD has started biting my nipple (bloody hard too!) to signify she has had enough of a feed, and will NOT go back on, or take the other side (which she always used to do)

I'm thinking it might be teething related (she has 4 already - top and bottom front, but maybe the other two top ones are on their way) so I'm not too worried, except that it seems that I am rather lopsided and awash with milk now, as a result of her only feeding from one side at each feed.

Or could it be that she is naturally cutting down the amount of milk she wants now (normally she has about 5 feeds a day with 1-2 of those at night). She certainly doesn't seem to be taking any more solids to compensate for her drop in milk.

Do I just go with her flow, and wait for her to go back to her old feeding pattern, or should I be expressing to keep the supply up?

I think they do get more efficient feeding so take more in less time. Ds has only bitten on occassion and I take him off and put him down and wait b4 letting him feed again if he wants too. He has only bitten occassionally when teething. I vaguely remember ds stopped feeding as much about 8 months but then strated taking more milk again so maybe it;'s a 'stage'

Well, she used to drain one side, then have a little break and a belch, then take a fairly good feed on the 2nd side. Now, when she bites and comes off after about 5 mins on the first side, I can feel there is still plenty of milk there... but that might be because they are a bit fuller ATM because she's feeding less...

Bizarrely, even though she's feeding less, she's sleeping better - only woken once to feed the past two nights.

Sheesh, babies eh?

Just wanted to say.....Ouch! My dd is doing the biting thing at the moment. In her case though its testing those little knashers and when she decides that she wants to have a look round without letting go.

Is she still feeding as much, even if it is on one side?
