Infant feeding

stopping bf after a year - how long for supply to reduce?

I am on day three of not feeding, having given my last feed on Wednesday. I had gradually reduced down to one feed a day so the impact wouldn't be so bad. Now on day 3 my boobs are feeling lumpy and a bit sore but not red. Do I just go with it, using heat pads etc or should I express at all? How long will it take for my supply to disappear?
Thanks

I went with Sudafed, Ibuprofen and sage tea when I weaned DS1 at 13 months - I think it took about a week to stop feeling a bit uncomfortable. I had dropped one feed per week over a four week period and didn't express after I stopped feeding him.

I stopped 10 days ago after dropping to 1 feed a couple of weeks earlier.

Now I have no discomfort lumpiness etc and I was v prone to blocked ducts and mastitis. I just went with it and avoided any stimulation. I had a few uncomfortable lumpy dats but it wasn't too bad. Just watch for mastitis signs.

Try ice or cold packs as heat can stimulate milk.

Cabbage leaves - of course! I forgot about that tip. Currently sat here with nappies filled with warm water (another mumsnet tip!) in my bra.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not quite as lumpy and definitely not feeling full just sore. I've leaked a bit but not massively. Hoping to just get through it now as surely day three would be about as bad as it would get? Confused

Cabbage leaves in bra definitely help. I remember being uncomfortable for a few days but I didn't need to express.

Hi there
Didn't want to ignore you, although my experience was different - tapering down feeding to one a day and stopping at 7ish months. Basically I went with it, took ibuprofen when it was too uncomfortable and didn't express so that I didn't encourage supply. It was very uncomfortable for 3-4 days then I felt like I had deep bruising for a good fortnight (but ok to pick up and hold my baby etc), then it was ok. Hormonally I then felt dicey for a good couple - three weeks.

Hope this is helpful and a massive well done for feeding as long as you have x

I would express a little, just to make yourself comfortable. Tomorrow you will need to express a little less and so on. But I am a wuss and would be too afraid of mastitis to go cold turkey.
