Latching on pains at 8m

Has anyone got any ideas why I might be getting pains now, after all this time?! DD is sucking hard, but not harder than usual, I think. It seems to be worse on one side. She has no teeth yet, could they be on her way and bothering her? Or something else? It isn't really bad and not a patch on how it used to be, but I'd got used to it being pain free!

Thanks . It's not completely right at the moment, but if it isn't sorted by mid-week, I might go to a local Baby Cafe.

I didn't know that either. Very interesting.

RedZ sorry to hear you had to go through that. I can't see or feel any problems like this and it isn't as painful as that sounds (thank goodness!)

Actually, I mentioned the pains to the BFC at the BF support group I go to and she said that this can happen just before periods return and so this was a possibility! BFing never ceases to amaze me!

Also just a thought...

I've had pain in the nipple since my blockage last weekend. Rootling on the internet and speaking to the NCT breastfeeding line, I ascertained that the opening to the duct had 'skinned' over. I could see an area with a white dot under the skin and skin where you might not expect to see it. Some scratching at it with a sterile pin and I managed to get the skin tag off. Subsequently in the shower, I massaged out a small hard plug of what I assume was milk / fat.

Pretty yucky, I know, but have you had a look for a blocked duct in your nipples...? It was unbelievably painful on feeding before I cleared it.

I never thought about that but it probably wouldn't occur to me seeing as I haven't had a period yet!

Just a thought but you haven't got your period have you? I ask because My feeding went a bit funny then as Tilly didn't settle as well - weird.
Glad it's getting better...

Hi, thanks for thinking of me Redzuleika What is a bleb? A blister? Poor you!

I think I had undiagnosed thrush early on (HV just checked DD's mouth, which was clear) and it doesn't feel like that at the moment. I haven't had any antibotics for years (lucky me!) However, after Prufrock's post, I'll definately keep an eye on it over the next couple of days.

Tipex - LOL, DD is exactly like that! I haven't had to worry about her latch for such a long time but I'll have to be more careful, see if that helps.

Thanks

I had pains after 8 months of trouble free bf and it turned out to be thrush. t did start of as an uncomfortable tugging feeling - likie teh milk was being drgged out of me - and I also put it down to teething. Then the pains got worse, and my nipple wnet a bit shiny and flaky, and I finally posted on her to be told it was thrush. Do go to your GP, because it can be cleared easily, though you mjust make sure you and dd get treated even if she has no symptoms (your GP might not be aware of this btw)

I've been thinking about this (which I'm sure is a comfort to you!) and have no very good ideas. The LLL suggest that you can get thrush after several weeks or months of trouble-free nursing, including "Intense nipple or breast pain that is not improved with better latch-on and positioning." You haven't been taking antibiotics or anything recently have you?

My breast is fine, now, by the way. Nipple pain gone. Think I might have had a small bleb, which disappeared / popped on Sunday night.

Hi Tatties
It's been a few days and the pain is just behind the nipple. Not a sharp stabbing pain shooting through, hard to explain but it's as though the sucking is tugging too hard. I had said one side was worse but now I think it's probably about equal.
It isn't as bad as your bad patches sound and if it's likely to last a short time, that makes me feel a bit better
Thanks!

I don't know but ds is 10mths and I have gone through the odd uncomfortable patch myself from time to time. Where exactly is the pain? Sometimes I get a tiny blister on my nipple which hurts like hell when ds latches on, and sometimes if his teeth are bothering him he will have a chew which isn't nice either... But any discomfort from these things tends to only last a couple of days at a time. How long have you felt like this?
