Black Mumsnetters

Do people find pleasure in picking on black women or am I imagining it?

About 20 years ago things were a little different. Then Brexit came and I feel Britain became quite xenophobic. Not that I had not experienced xenophobia, bias, micro-aggressions, racism before - it was just different and nowhere near as bad.
Have people just become comfortable with these behaviours? I want to use well known people as examples, Serena Williams, Meghan Markle, Naomi Osaka, Sloan Stephens, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, Oprah, Leonna Lewis, Alex Burke to mention just a few genuinely hardworking women (black/ mixed heritage) who are also heaving involved in charity work.
I am always confused as to why there are so many negative comments whenever there's any article on these women and others in British papers and forums such as these.

What is it about a black or mixed heritage woman that rubs people the wrong way in this country? I also find that many people struggle to navigate the system, whether it's career, mortgages, business, even just simple things as parenting and school in a community where they are minorities.
Britain is meant to be welcoming - at least on paper apparently it is because it's a melting pot of different cultures. What's your experience and have you considered relocating (I have done it, then returned and will leave again).

@bbgx You know, if more people could discuss their points of view relatively calmly as we just have, I think there might be a lot more points of agreement and much less 'dislike' on all sides. I live in hopes.

Not in the spirit

@PinkFrogss

Just to clarify, I wasn't trying to derail the thread, but after the implication that people don't like Meghan solely because of her colour, I felt that I needed to justify why I don't like her. It's nothing to do with her colour.

There is a thread on this board about Kemi and she was ripped to pieces by the posters.

Most people were disagreeing with her politics though. I didn't notice anyone say she's "strutting about" like she's been sleeping with the boss or calling her a "diva bitch" (seen on a Serena thread). Saying that you have concerns about the policies she supports is slightly different.

You are derailing the thread. There are lot's of MM threads you can go there and pour your heart out. This isn't about that.

You were derailing the thread. You know exactly what you were hoping to achieve. Your agenda is blindingly obvious.

Let me guess you are white.

A thread primarily about black women and all she wants to talk about is MM who is mixed race anyway.

You're not imagining it OP. At all. It's insidious.

As for the people who feel the need to come onto this thread and state they're not racist they just don't like MM - what the hell is the point?

There is a thread on this board about Kemi and she was ripped to pieces by the posters.

Go back on the thread and highlight where Kemi was ripped to pieces on what she looks like, who she is married to and what her children look like.

She was ripped to pieces on her policies and what she said which could be proven to untrue. It was pointed out on the thread that all the remaining candidates could be ripped to pieces on those factors but as it is Black MN they are irrelevant to this section.

Are we still allowed to dislike women (black or white) because of their character not their sex? I don't like MM or DA at all. At the same time I do like SW and Kemi Badenoch. There are plenty of white women I don't like as well.

If you don’t actually know either of them so how can you tell if you like them or not?

MM and DA are simply the ones who get the most hate.

Well I haven't followed anybody - just like looking at the news and politics in general. I'm not a fan of murderers either.

I'm sure there are racists that don't like Meghan because of her race but I'm equally sure there are many others (in fact the majority) don't like her because of her character and her belief that she can just come and change the whole royal family just because she's a celebrity in U.S. lncidentaly I don't like the way the royal family go on either.
Also I have NOT said racists don't exist. Please don't put words into my mouth that you would have liked me to have said.

What do you know of MM’s character? Has she said she wanted to change the royal family or is that something the media has told you she wants?

You’re not imagining it OP.

I’ve never seen anything like the MM phenomenon. Everyone involved should be ashamed of themselves.

I can't stand Kemi but it's her policies that grip me. I certainly wouldn't insult her personally or be derogatory about her and that's the difference. Criticism can be constructive, you can tell when racism is disguised as something else.

For those posters being disingenuous.....do bore off.

I will always give a side eye to anyone who says they love kemi Badenock. It seems like she has woken all the non black people to know her during this election. Before that the only people who commented at length were black people and no one cared

Yah! You felt the hate for megan so strongly that you thought everyone on here should know you view. Well!

You are not imagining it. Experienced covert and overt racism, sexism, misogynoir, you name it and I've experienced it and I'm still experiencing it now...I'm tired of it and have no fight in me left. My mental health has been shot to pieces for years. I don't have the pick up and rebuild in me left anymore. There are some people I truly believe take great pleasure in picking on black women and the sad thing is it will never change a new wave of nastiness every day a new generation born and taught nastiness at every turn.

There's a post about Serena Williams' retirement in AIBU and although the majority think she's the GOAT, it didn't take long for the accusations of arrogance and "grunting" to come up.

Just looking around a few threads now and it's amazing how Meghan Markle continues to live rent-free in so many posters' heads. They really are obsessed with sticking the boot on at every opportunity. I've never seen anything quite like it in all my years on Mumsnet.

feels like anyone who disagrees will be jumped on without debate.

just carry on agreeing and that’s fine.

I agree that with Megan I think it has zero to do with her mixed ethnicity and everything to do with her being American but of course, how will we ever know?

I'm white, I think this country is becoming more racist since Brexit.

I think women are shat on a lot and add being black to that mix will make it even worse. Poor, black woman, single mum or successful black woman will just add to the hatred from certain arseholes that live in this country.

Unfortunately I can't see this getting any better, I think the state of the country and the financial problems coming up for most people, will mean women in general will get more hatred thrown at them and racism will worsen too. People tend to want to shove their anger at someone. Very sad and utterly appalling.

Yes it is pretty horrible what Black women have to put up with regarding how they are treated, because of the colour of their skin. People who are not black or brown can disagree all they like. It is like men denying that sexism exist.

You're not imagining it. Just look at any amount of threads on MN devoted to tearing apart Meghan Markle, Diane Abbott or Serena Williams.

Or Margaret Thatcher, Liz Truss, Angela Rayner, Sarah Ferguson, Angela Merkel, Finnish PM, Hilary Clinton, Gemma Collins, Victoria Beckham....

It's not black women, it's women.
