Alexander Kinross Stirling Mooney made his appearance in the world on Valentine's Day at 17:52 at a very healthy 9lbs 6oz.
And here's how we did it....
Monday 12th Feb (40wks +1) My Dad brings over the table top changing unit he made, thus completing the nursery. Feeling well hacked off with being pregnant, but superstitiously wanting to avoid the 13th for a birthday.
Tuesday 13th Feb
05:00 - woken with big sharp pain in my back on the left side only. Have to walk around the house to relieve it. However it dies down and DP heads for work, but with a fully charged phone.
07:30 - woke again with a feeling like having a water balloon between my legs. I wonder what will happen if I move. Then I move and my waters break as I leap(ish) out of bed. Thank heavens for sleeping in tracksuit bottoms, not a drop on the mattress, just bottoms and the carpet.
10:00 - have to ask my Dad to take me to the hospital to get checked out. (Dad acts cool but swears at all other drivers on the road there and back) DP starts organising cover at his shop as he is the only permanent staff member in this week !
12:00 - Still leaking, got monitored and examined at hosp, everything fine, to come back for induction next morning if there's nothing happening. Have to go home in soaked trousers sitting on a towel.
16:00 - contraction start as soon as DP arrives home.
20:00 - contractions becoming regular but bearable with TENS machine. However, I was given a TenaLady pad for the leaking which I flushed without thinking about it. DP discovers, after using the toilet that it's completely blocked. However he is unable to be angry with me as I am now having quite strong contractions. After being up past his elbow in...... it.... we have to call my Dad to come over with some long hose and fix it, meantime I'm trying to hide the contractions from him so he won't worry.
22:00 - contractions becoming more painful and frequent at about 6-9 mins. call hosp, told to try and get some rest if I can and call back later.
24:00 - Send DP for a nap as he's been up since 5:30 and it's likely to be a long night.
Wednesday 14th Feb
01:00 - Wake DP with shouting and swearing through contractions which have just gone to every 3-4 mins and v v paiinful. Call hosp and tell them I'm coming NOW. Get the L plates on the car (DP hasn't passed yet !!) and off... All credit to DP he drove swiftly and steadily despite being a learner with a screaming banshee in the passenger seat every 3 mins or so.
02:00 Get to hosp and have to be wheelchaired in bellowing.
Memories of the next few hours are pretty jumbled... I was found to be 5cms dilated (v disappointed in this) I used gas and air... lots of it... but the mouth piece kept coming off !!!! I was copiously sick all down DP... I used a birthing ball and lots of walking around, kneeling on mats and leaning on the bed... I said I wanted my cat.... I swore violently and kept apologising to everyone.. DP tried to persuade me to take some fresh air in between contractions... I used a small cuddly elephant to try and focus on the baby during contractions (which actually helped a lot).
Upshot was the LO was back to back and suspected to be deflex as well. I was advised to take morphine (no arguements from me) and carried on. Mid morning I was only 8cms and offered an epi (again no agruments from me)as they wanted me on a drip to stimulate the contractions... however it didn't take properly and it had to be repeated .. I now love epidurals.
17:00 - 8 hours of drip and still only 8cm. Not clear if LO has turned now or not. Now been in labour for 26 hours. Consultant advises CS as the risks to me and LO will only increase if we continue and the drip's not working.
Quick top up on the epi and swiftly into theatre, somewhat terrified about the whole process and very upset at having to abandon the natural delivery I had wanted. DP appears looking dashing in blue scrubs and hat...
17:52 Feels like someone is doing the washing up in my tummy, and moments later... we hear a baby screaming... DP looks over the screen and tells me that we have a boy ! The most beautiful thing I have ever seen is then flashed past me and taken off to get quickly checked before being handed to his Dad. All fears and concerns gone as I gaze at the new love of my life. We decide to name him Alexander before we are even out of the theatre.
... the memory of the whole thing is fading fast now... and the days after were a bit of a blur too. I've had an infection in the wound (about as damn near painful as the contractions but without the good pain relief) and we've had problems trying to establish bfing resulting in a whole week in the hosp. Now home and very weepy and exhausted but glad to be back in my own bed.
