20 month old DS old soaked through every morning - no nappy seems to contain it!

Every morning for the last month or so my poor DS has woken up completely soaked through. His vest, pyjamas, grow bag and sheets/matress are all very wet. It dosnt seem to bother him so much but he has been waking a bit earlier than usual - about 7ish. He normally likes his sleep and used to wake a bit later. Ive tried a range of nappies and have been restricting his fluids before bed but maybe not enough? I would be very grateful for any advice as Im struggling to keep on top of all the washing!

Putting a Motherease waterproof wrap (the kind you use with cloth nappies) on over the disposable nappy at night has completely solved this problem for us.

Why not sit him on the toilet every night before his bath? We did this with ours, it gets them used to toilet without full on potty training and is a good habit to get into.

Im pleased to report that last night was a dry night. I limited his water in the hours before bed and just to be on the safe side, I double layered his waterproof sheets as I was advised by browneyesblue.
He is a very wriggly sleeper so I think maybe his willy may be getting redirected during the night!
I think I might stop putting the baby vests on under his pyjamas as I fear this may not be helping - good thinking insancerre!

another one who thinks it might be due to the position of his willy
he might be putting his hand in and when he wees when asleep it might be going upwards instead of into the nappy
does he wear a babyvest when in bed?

Defo try the nappy change before you go to bed - we have a toilet trained 3 year old, but we still make her do a sleepy wee before we go off, say 11pm - they really don't wake up fully and the added bonus is that it breaks the 4 hour sleep cycle and puts them straight into the next one, just because you're disturbing them a bit. This was actually a trick we picked up from a sleep specialist and it really works!

Lucy - DS used to have this problem.

Just a thought. Is there any chance the urine is just coming up over the top of the waste band?

Problem solved by making sure his penis was pointing downwards when putting his nappy on. Pointing up it just comes over the top of waist band without being soaked up by the nappy.

Years ago I had this problem. I used two nappies, one on top of the other and made a hole in the waterproof layer of the inner nappy.

Thank you for your advice everyone. I do think he may have become more aware of his functions. I have been encouraging him to use the potty and toilet when he wants to and seems able to do this quite happily so far but this has been confinded to his nappy-off time on late afternoon. I havent tried doing the full-on potty training as I was going to wait till it was a bit warmer given he would be pantless for most of the time. Do you think I should try this sooner? He asked to do a poo on the big toilet yesterday and managed it easily.

I think I will try a quick change of nappy before I go to bed too and see if that can get him through till morning. If not then Ill get some of the little lamb bamboos1

We have to use size 6 on our toddler to get her through the night because she likes to drink a lot of water in bed.

Oh, and I remember reading some great advice on here about double-sheeting the bed which may be useful.

If you use 2 waterproof sheets (Ikea and Dunelm both do cheap ones) and 2 top sheets, so mattress - waterproof sheet - top sheet - waterproof sheet - top sheet, then if he does wet the bed you can just whip the first 2 layers off and you still have a dry bed for him to sleep on quickly.

It seems there's a good saving on buying 3 (sounds ideal as you have time to wash and always have a clean one at bedtime). The 3 pack comes with outer wraps and lovely soft fleece liners). Smile

Have you tried changing him in the night, before you go to bed? I remember changing DS1 at night (just a straight nappy swap) when he was a similar age, and after a couple of nights he didn't even wake.

Is it possible that he is holding his wee while he's awake (that he has become aware of when he needs to go), and so has a fuller bladder than normal at night?

Have you tried little lamb bamboo (washable nappies) for night?
I think they're fabulous. Even if you don't use washables for day - may be worth getting 3-4 of these just so you can use at night.
I'm sure you can get one "test" kit from their website at a good price.
