How old was your child when they learned to climb out of a cot?

dt2 jsut appeared. I put him in bed. I've been up with him and watched him climb between his and dt1s cot and back again then out of the cot altogether. He is only 16mnths. Both seem unbelievably agile to me, can climb in and out of their high chairs, over the back of the sofa (the hard way - over the back to the front).
I'm now wonderign what on earth I am going to do come bedtime. He isn't an easy child at all, and generally doesn't do as he is told.

Do babies normally climb out this early? dd couldn't at 2 or so, and ds went into a bed early, but was generally more compliant and could be relied on to stay there!

Dd1 never climbed out of her cot

Dd2 however figured out how to climb out of her cot a week past Tuesday she's 2.3years. She's a nightmare and we're in the process of getting her moved into a big bed, I'm scared she'll break a bone climbing out. I tried putting her back into her gro-bag in an attempt to prevent her climbing out but that only lasted 5 minutes as she just undid the zip and climbed out anyway.

Loved the video just goes to show the determination these little people have.

love the clip, he was sooo determined
my dd was 15 months when she first escaped her cots, she finds it easier to get out of her travel cot, she just hooks 1 leg over then sort of throws herself the rest of the way, when she gets out of her big cot it takes her a bit longer, but she gets there in the end, its a major pain in the bum!

That clip is so funny! I showed my husband and now we're scared that OLO will get up to similar!

Babies can be so wily!

sympathise with your problem. dd1 started at 21 months climbing out of cot - had portable stair gate installed at bedrom door! Remember trudging to Argos at 3 months gone to buy one! dd2 however was different story. climbed out at 15 months. Used Tracy Hogg method at first and then ended up putting her in bed with portable side. They share a room and dd1 has asd so have to referee them now at bedtime(dd1 is 4 1/2 and dd2 2) but snall price to pay for no bumped heads

i've rearranged the room so that either end of the cot is blocked off and it seem to have fooled him for now! He is not impressed, but is at least safe for now.
thank you for sharing the video clip, wangle he is gorgeous and soo funny!

My ds1 must have been less than 20 months as he moved into a bed at that age and had long been climbing in and out of his cot.

My other children never did it, even though ds3 was in his cot until gone 3 years.

Just a word of warning: my neice, aged 2.3, broke both bones in her lower arm and disolcated her elbow last weekend climbing out fo her cot!

That clip is brilliant, you can almost see the little thought bubbles above his head at every stage of the escape.

DS climbed out when he was 2.5 years old (quite late compared to some!).

We couldn't work out how he did it, so caught him on camera...

ds was 12mths and doing a bouncing vault over the cot so we put him into a toddler bed..dd I am hoping will be in there longer as she is in grobag and also not as tall as he was.

at climbing out of growbag too! I do think maybe dt2 could do that too, as he is great at stripping and can manage zips no trouble.

Thanks for the replies. I put the cot side down hoping that at least he could climb in and out safely, but he is still going over the ends, he is crazy! He has bumped his head on both sides and I am worried about him.
I really don't want to go for beds yet. The cot is a decent one and I had hoped it would last and their bedroom is tiny and wouldn't accomodate two beds or even a bed and a cot. My plan is eventually to move them in with ds, and let dd have the smaller room on her own.
I'm going to try rearanging the room today so both ends of the cot is blocked and see what he does next.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with an acrobatic baby! It's jsut while they are still small I worry about him gettign hurt.

DS1 was unzipping his gro-bag and climbing out at just over 1yr old! We put paid to that though by putting the gro-bag on - inside out and back to front !

He's still in a cot now (but not in his gro-bag as it's too hot) and he'll be 3 in November. He climbs in and out of his cot himself - as though he were climbing in and out of bed!

We have DS in a grobag too -- he's a little climbing machine normally but that's kept him cotbound so far.

2.4, and hadn't been out of her sleeping bag very long. She fell and hurt her head (not badly, it was on carpet) and that was the end of the cot!

My dd never once got out of her cot - her grobag put paid to that ! Can heartily recommend them !

Is he in a sleeping bag, or has he mastered that aswell?

When our Dd did this, we just kept putting her back in. She's still in it now, age 3 & 2 mths. We've had a couple of attempts at getting her into a bed, but she keeps getting out & snaking downstairs (!).

She does have a new bed, but she's been told she can't have it made up until her bedtime behaviour improves.
