Barium meals for 20mo.

Hello!

DD (20mo) needs a Barium meal and x-ray for an on-going gut problem. How easy is it to get a little one to drink it? DD has never been into drinking anything except water and breastmilk. Bit worried she won't co-operate!

DS had a barium swallow at 2 weeks old. Obviously they just gave it to him in a bottle but he seemed to enjoy it - he was a terrible eater, wouldn't take formula at all so was being tube fed, but he lashed back that stuff. It smelled pleasantly vanilla-ey.

Aha. I know the answer to this one. Ask them for a 20ml syringe and squirt into mouth as medicine. Too gloopy for bottle, grim in a cup... Make sure they use a flavoured syrup but just in case take some with you (think Ribena)

When ds had a barium swallow test, he was given it in a variety of things, a yoghurt, juice, milk, some cereal and on a biscuit. I was surprised at how well he ate ( he has all sorts of issues with eating) but I don't think he had to eat/drink too much, and it didn't seem to affect the taste, so we made sure it was in his favourite things.
