My (Nearly) 7 month old is walking round the room holding on to the furniture and my mother is having kittens as she thinks it will make him bow legged! surely he wouldnt do it if he wasnt ready? He's never had a walker, started crawling at 5mnths, an rekon he'll be off to uni within the year at this rate!!
Is it ok???

What fun! My 1st baby walked and talked very early and at 12 has very straight legs. I got that from my mum too. Just watch out he doesn't pile his toys in one corner and climb over the side of his cot.

wow - what a wee star! that must look hilarious. my ds started walking at 11 months, but he is v tiny, and for days after i was taken aback every time i saw my 'baby' tottering about the place - it just looked wrong somehow! i would love to see a walkimg 6 month old.

I never thought of the early walker later talker thing, but yes agreed. Child proof everything!!!!

My DTs go against theory of walking and talking. They were both up at 8 months, fully walking at 10 months. DT1 was chattering away by 18 months, sentences the whole shebang. DT2... well as long as he's fed.......... lol

Chaps you cant stop them. You have my sympathy as Ds was exactly the same. crawling at 5mths crusing at 6.5 and walking properly down the street by 8.5mths. also agree on early walker late talker. DS is 2.3yrs now and only started with words at 22mths and now talks non stop but about half is not comprehendsble.

Yes I am sure there is a link between walking and talking development - both my dds were late walkers (relatively, at 14 and 15 months) but early talkers. They were fairly ahead in their physical development until they discovered talking, then all that movement stuff took a back seat! Am very interested to see which way ds goes - he's just starting to verbalise now.

Now that he's got walking sussed, though, he will be able to give his attention to talking - as you say chapsmum, get that uni place ready for him

yes it's interesting about the speech and walking. DS2 has a pal who is just a week younger than him and she had a hip problem which meant she was a very late stander and didn't walk till she was 22mo or so IIRC (she walks fine now).
But yes, when all she could do was sit there or bum shuffle, say at 14-16 mo, she would say loads (eg request a drink). DS2 would just drag over the nearest chair and climb on the counter top lol. Why bother to talk when you can fetch!
His speech is good now btw.

Another early walker here. Definitely not bowlegged (if anything a bit knock-kneed atm). At the time I thought it was pretty great, but then you just have to start chasing them around that much earlier!

Just came back to this thread and found it very interesting - my early walking dd2 is also a late developer as far as speech is concerned. Love it when they fall asleep in their dinners, chapsmum! Such a good photo opportunity

ntt, not that I'm aware of
Thanks everyone, feel much better, although today has been spent following him round the living room catching him. Nappy changes are now done standing up, cot is now a climbing frame and my back is kiling me...
Was so cute though I just gave him dinner there and he fell asleep into his yogurt he was so knackered bless!!!!!

Oh what fun!! Is he Afro Caribbean by any chance? I was astounded when my paed told me it's not unusual for AC kids to be walking (not cruising) at 6 months

My MIL says that too about ds getting bandy legs - he loves me to stand him up, even though he's no where near getting there himself. Of course, I take no notice

Aren't mothers no it alls! My mil on her first visit to her grandson when he was days, said as I reached into the moses basket to pick him up to feed, "Don't keep picking it up, you'll bruise its bones!" Needless to say I don't listen to much she has to say!

another one with an early walker! no bow legs here either.
ds was a very kicky baby, even before he was born. when i had him 3 diff m/w's commented that they'd never seen a newborn that kicked so much!
i think that he must've built up the strength in his legs to walk early with all his kicking! lol

Miaou · 10/02/2006 12:42

wow chapsmum! Ds is six months, will stand up if you put him leaning against something, but hasn't the balance to do it unaided (thank goodness ). It certainly won't make him bow-legged at all, he is obviously just very strong!

Thats interesting Clary - my DS is very "physical" but doesn't say very much whereas my DD was very good with talking, but slower than DS at walking etc.

Report
Clary · 10/02/2006 12:38

chapsmum it's fine, please don't worry. DS2 started cruising like this at 6-7 mo, (had crawled at 5mo) and walked unaided at 9mo and 1 week. Now at 2.9 he's really keen on climbing, running, anything physical. Speech was slower than his less mobile peers, interestingly.

all babies have slightly bowed legs, but actually in early walkers it can get worse before it gets better. They all grow out of it, however, and often become knock-kneed before they straighten out completely (overcompensation).
