Non-crawling 10 months old

My 10 months old is not crawling yet. He spends periods in the day on his front( about 15 mins at a time), lifts himself up on his hands but does not seem to be able to work out the legs movements yet.
I sort of know that all children do stuff at their own pace but I am now becoming slightly more worried about it as all the other children of the same ageor younger that we meet can crawl or/and lift themselves up.
I must point out that when he was a small baby, he HATED being on his tummy and therefore the tummy time is only relatively recent.
Can someone out there reassure me, please?

Not a mother but a word of support for those with late developers - I did not walk or talk until I was two, I never crawled, just bum shuffled. The other mothers used to pity my Mum at playgroup, just 3 years later on a school I had over taken all their DC in speech/learning. So she got the last laugh, I was always in the top levels throughout school, passed my 11plus, went to Grammar school and was the first person in my family to go to Uni, gaining a 2:1 in a decent subject. I think Michael McIntyre did a sketch on how we shouldn't worry about walking and talking because we all end up mastering it at some point!
My DN is pretty much the same as me so it seems that times have not changed one bit, but at 4 years old now she is completely normal compared to her peers.

My baby is 8.5 months and no crawling yet. He has just learnt to sit up but is stil a little unsteady even at that. He can push himself backwards when he is on his stomach but he doesn't have the leg movements yet. I suspect he will be another 2 or so months at least until he crawls.

His speech is quite developed though. Says "mama" and "dada" and "baba". But yes it is hard not to worry when other babies have been crawling for months by now....

I also had resigned myself that my dd would never move, worrried all the time!! She sat up from seven months and that's all she did until she was thirteen months!!

Started crawling at thirteen months, now at nearly fourteen months she's rolling, pulling up, cruising and walking with push along walker!!

She is very laid back, chilled and big baby, think these things contribute to later mobility!!

DD didn't crawl until a week AFTER her 1st birthday! And then she was walking by 15 months. She is 2 now, and runs rings around me every single day - enjoy the stillness whilst you can Grin

Don't worry and make the most of it. Seriously savour this sitting there time as crawling/cruising babies are a pita.

I say this as an exasperated mother of a mobile 9 month old. It's rubbish!!

My toddler is now 21 months and was late in terms of movement, for example he showed no interest in crawling even at 12 months. We took him to our gp who referred him to the hosp. The consutant checked him out and confirmed that there was no physical reason for his late development, just that he was calm, happy, content and will move when he was ready! He started bum shuffling at 13 months, crawled at 15 mths then finally cruising by 19 months. He then quickly walked 4 weeks later.

As someone who wondered if their little one would ever be on the move I'd say, if you're worried get them checked out, and then just be patient. The upside to the late walking is that his skills in play and speech are excellent as he's sat still and focused on those first!!

This is a good thread for me...DS is 7 months, 3 weeks and sits for hours unaided, and can reach for toys forward and sideways, and can roll loads, all ways and often ends up on the other side of the mat...but doesn't really show any interest in crawling yet. He gets frustrated if he can't get the toy he wants but not enough to do something about it

So I shouldn't be worried? Is there anything I can do to help?

Well that's brilliant. I would stop worrying (although I know it's hard, I worry about everything) and just enjoy the last little bit of him being non-mobile. Soon you will be struggling to contain him and you won't be able to sit and have coffee as he will be into everything :)

yes he quite likes to stand. doesn't do steps though.
we don't have 8 months checks here.

I wouldn't worry as it's not particularly late. My DS1 started crawling at 10mths and then started walking a month later.

Has he had his 8mth check and can he weight bear on his legs?

DS1 HATED tummy time too.

My DS didn't crawl at all until he learnt to walk. I took him to gymbabes when he was 9mo to encourage him, didn't work - but he did start to walk with help when he was about 10.5mo and then a couple of weeks after he was walking by himself (about 12mo) he started crawling! Strange boy.

DS1 didn't start crawling till he was 11 months, and went from a commando crawl on his front to zooming around like a dervish in no time.

They all get there in the end, OP. All you can do is encourage lots of tummy time, and be patient. And don't compare him to other babies - he'll do it in his own time and his own way!

my first grandson did not crawl he just pulled him self up to walk round the house etc

Thanks all, he's very content sitting reaching out to his toys and when one is not in reach, he just gets another one.
Love the picture of stuck crab, mine looks like a beached whale!

My DD is 9 month old and no sign of crawling but this might be because she is my second child and everytime I see another baby her age crawling I cover her eyes. I promise non-moving at 9-10 months is still a good thing.

Yes my DS, almost 11 months launched off and crawled last week - I was convinced he would bypass crawling because he looked like a stuck crab on his tummy....and then he was off! He is seriously fast now and I miss the peace and quiet!!

My dd was the same, she also crawled backwards for weeks and was 17 months before she walked. They all get there in the end though, if no progress at12mo you could ask your hv but I really doubt you've anything to worry about. (Dd was a little early and v small too)

Mine neither! He's 9mo. He sits up happily and can get around in his bum but hates being on his tummy. He screams! A lot!

When he was really little he hated tummy time so we didn't do it.

Does your LO sit up ok?

I completely sympathise. My DD who turned one yesterday, actually didnt crawl until just over a week ago!! Now all of a sudden not only is she whizzing about everywhere she is also cruising, pulls herself up and trying to walk on her own!! All in the space of a week. So please dont worry, I was the same, whenever I took her to playgroup she was the only one who just sat there with no attempts to move around whatsoever. All kids catch up with eachother eventually. HV actually told me if she still hasnt crawled by 18mnths then to go see the Health visitor or doctor. So you have loooads of time yet :) xx
