What do you think of Euphemia as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

Sounds pretentious and strange to me.

Awful. It sounds like a noise that you might make when you sneeze.

Sorry to be harsh and you should call your DC whatever you want them to be called and not take take any notice of anyone else's opinion, but I really don't like the name Euphemia.

Yes, if you are a 45 year old woman of colour.

I know 3 and they're all from Nigeria

auntmelie, you posted about Euphemia too, right? I'm spotting a theme...

It will be Hilda or Ethel next mark my words.

I absolutely love it. And I love Effie too (probably because my DD is Effy).

I know a Fimi - otherwise Euphemia.

Scottish ancestry - where I think it has been most common ( though obv not wildly so). Fay is also a shortened form.

I have never actually heard this name, but I have to admit my first thoughts were the same as ponymum's. Sorry.

I do however like Effie. It's very sweet. Not sure whether Effie could be used as a nickname for something else.

Euphemia is lovely - feminine and elegant .

Don't see how you'd get from Euphemie/Effie to elefant... I can see how Ellie could get called elefant, but Effie .

I thought of euthansia or a disease (emphysema?) Isn't Esme short for Esmerelda? I liked Esme for my DD until I remembered the Hunchback of Notre Dame!

No - it's one of those old lady names which should die off with that generation. No Euphemia was ever called that, it was always shortened to Effie. There was a reason for that...

Reminds me of Euphonium - sorry

Report
Ponymum · 11/02/2010 13:03

Other than the fact that you must be joking and have no intention of actually using it, my thoughts are:

  1. Euphemism
  2. Euthanasia
  3. Euphonium
  4. Some sort of rare but ghastly blood disorder.

Surely no one would really call their child Euphemia?

Emphysema. That's what I thought too.

I like Effie.

'Twas my granny's name - she swore blind she would inflict grievous bodily harm on any of her children who gave the name to a grandchild, she hated it so much. Consequently, I find myself unable to like it.

We did spend an amusing afternoon trying to come up with new nicknames for her (she was known as Effie) - her favourite was Phuff......
