Baby names

The new Sharon and Kevin?

Just wondering what all you MNers think are going to be the new "Sharon/Kevin" type names for our kids generation (i.e. names that will become dreadfully common in the future, and the subject of sketch show stereotypes!)

BTW - please don't take offence if you are a Sharon or a Kevin....there are lots in my family and none of them are common, but they DO get a lot of stick for their names!!!

What a laugh, ladies - thank God I have a shortlist of names that's not likely to offend anyone. I only looked at this thread because I really fancy Kevin McCloud..

I started a thread like this a couple of years ago, when I was new and a little less thoughtful, perhaps Oh brother, was I flamed. So I am not going to name names on this thread but merely say that the only names which don't seem to date are king and queen names:

James
Jane
Anne
Catherine

and so on.

(only read pages 1 & 7)

i quite like the name Sharon - isn't it in the bible etc?

i dunno whether its a stereotype name in the making but i know an awful lot of little girls named 'Lily' - i quite like said name but prefer it spelled correctly.....i took issue with my friend naming her dd 'lilli' esp since the rest of her hyphenated name was also spelled wrong.

what about 'Britney'?

I know about a dozen 'Jack'.

ps i don't mean to offend. I have a name which was unusual when I was born but is now the name of choice for brassy soap characters and footballers wives!

I know somebody who called her son Kevin (in Wexford) wouldn't be my choice, but it isn't totally mocked here.

I'm from Northern Ireland and Kevin's a normal nice-sounding name there.

It think Sharon's a lovely-sounding name, but then I would say that, as it's my name.

I'm 32, and there were no other Sharons in my class at school, none that I actually remember at my school, none in the "chavvy" council estate that I grew up in, none in my classes at university when I was doing my undergraduate or postgraduate degrees. So maybe it wasn't actually all that common. Are some of you surprised that a Sharon could be this educated?

I have lived abroad for most of my adult life, and people in the countries I have lived in have said they think my name is lovely.

Anyway I think it's a lovely name that will be "rediscovered" some day.

my son is an alfred but he has always been alfie or alf. plus we blinking love the shirley hughes books.

I actually get offended by people thinking its chavvy. especially when i was in a town the other day and i heard of twins called dolce and gabanna being shouted at in HMV.

haha Bucharest I was just going to say exactly the same. I wouldn't dream of judgeing someone on the basis of their name - but I'd gladly judge their parents!

Report
Bucharest · 08/02/2010 11:48

I don't judge anyone by their name either. But by heck I can have a lot to say about their parents.....

I don't judge anyone by his/her name, I've already said I've got a cousin Tracy (named after the smart character in High Society) and my own daughter's name has been described as 'boring' on here. Permission to be slightly amused though at folk who love to join in the general sneering at what they perceive to be the modern equivalent of Tracy and then get incredibly offended when suddenly someone pops 'Amelie' or 'Eloise' or whatever onto the list and suddenly it's THEIR child's name and oh no that can't possibly be 'common'!

Also agree with Chickens that an unusual and exotic name can represent attention seeking on the part of the parents. Interesting to have the views of a 'recipient' on here.

I have some names I would class as chavish but wouldnt dream of upsetting anyone by putting them on here!!

Couldn't agree more!!

Have the courage of your convictions, people! Who honestly cares what a bunch of randoms on the internet think??

Bucharest/Maggie I think you've got smashing attitudes wrt your children's names. We all, each and every one of us, have a name which would be considered naff/poncey/chavvy/stuck-up to someone else. No point getting our knickers in a twist about it.

Report
MaggieTaSeFuar · 08/02/2010 10:29

You can't win though. For those of you who are indignant that your children's names have been suggested as the names that might potentially be the ones labelled chav in the future... my children's names have been labelled conservative, crusty and dated on different occasions. There is no name that will please everybody, and nobody has a crystal ball either.

Sharon was just a bible name when it was at its peak.

I really find the righteous indignation about opinions funny.

My dds name gets slagged off constantly on these threads (not for being "chavvy" but for being twee) It would never cross my mind to be offended and shouty about it because I am perfectly confident in my choice.

I'd suggest, reading some of the righteous indignation posts on here, that others might not be so confident in the choices they've made. Hardly our fault if people think your name choices are minging is it?

Meh. And all that.

Stanley/Alfred and all those "old granny names" will indeed date, they will be cyclical. But they won't ever be considered Kevin/Sharon names.

o great!!! my dd evie!! haha and it wasnt so popular when i had her in fact my oh wanted to call her ellie and i said no there r to many of them!!!

i would like to think it will become more of a louise/sarah/claire type name where there r alot of them but dont see it as a chav name.

where as kev and sharron r chavv names (my oh is kevin so i am screwed!!) hahahaha

what about names like- hector edmound stanley, all granny names for girls etc, think will be a short lived trend and sound stupid in couple of yrs!

LOL edam, not quite, but the first 3 letters are the same (though pronounced Lie rather than Li). Some people just lack imagination, that's all I can say

amerimommy - I'm sure there are names in the US which have certain, shall we say, connotations... Billy-bob?

Don't take it too personally. People express their opinions freely on here, but are sweetness and light in real life, and I'm sure, wouldn't let their prejudices against a name prevent them from actually giving the person a chance!!

Sharona - what did full stops and the English language ever do to piss you off? Living up to your name a bit there!!
