What do people think of Rudy?

I am due with my 3rd child this month and I really do love this name.. but have reservations about how well received it will be. I don't want to saddle my son with a name that potentially could cause problems..

I wonder if people are more aware of it as a proper name sice edith bowman had a rudy last year?

thanks onemoretimetday.. due today! but pretty sure we have decided it will be Eli.. close call but think the 'rude' comparisons make me slightly hesitant over 'rudy'.. love both though..

Really awful imo. I don't like Rudolph at all and also agree that it's too close to Rude!

I agree with Firawla - it sounds like rude!

funnily enough it's a name we're seriously considering and it goes really nicely with our other childrens names. My DH really loves Reuben which I am not that keen on but perhaps I could persuade him that if we use Reuben we could use Rudy. Funnily enough your other post is another name we're considering. You have good taste.

Really don't like Rudy/Rudolph, and that's before I thought about the 'rude' similiraty...

it sounds so much like the word "rude"
im suprised so many people really like it cos i thought everyone would think of that. it is cute but i just see a lot of teasing potential.
the same with full name rudolph wouldnt they just get so many reindeer jokes? (it is cute too, but i think a brave choice??)

Really don't like Rudolph/Rudy at all - probably because I know too many 60-70 year olds with that name..

OrangeAnge, you must mean Ruedi - its just the Swiss-German version of Rudi and is also a shortform of Rudolf/Rudolph.

It's top of my list at the moment - just need to convince my boyfriend! Obviously, I love it! We know a guy in his 40's called Rudy and he is fab. I don't think it's short for anything though.

We know of another baby recently called Reudi - it's swiss apparently.

Thanks everyone for your opinions.. sort of what I guessed really. It seems to be a 'love' or 'hate' name - and I'm pleasantly surprised that by far the 'love its' are in the majority (grin). Maybe it is the name for me.

Its very nice, but is a nickname. Call him Rudyard or Rudolph, it looks more dignified!

belgo · 24/09/2009 17:38

I know a couple of middle aged Rudys.

I don't have a problem with it...only we'd get confused...DS2 loves his Rudy (stuffed reindeer). For me it would be a bit like Noel - a Christmas name. I feel like we need some of those Santa smileys now.

In all fairness seeker, I really cant blame your little boy for thinking its hilarious

I'm sorry but I hate it, I mean I really cant think of a more horrible name at the minute.

Where I am, "rudy" has always been another name for a fart - people say it to little children.

Sorry.

I love it and its on our list but I'd always have thought as a nn for Rudolph (not Reuben). Ours will be a xmas baby so not sure if Rudolph is too cruel though
