Has Kevin surpassed naffness to enter a new era of acceptability?

I would not use the name personally, but it seems to me that a whole new raft of names have come to the fore these days, making names such as Kevin (Gary, Barry, Lee etc) seem almost quasi-respectable.

What do you think? Maybe it still needs a few more years yet.

My son is at school with a Dennis. I said " Dennnnissss? " the first time my son mentioned him! I think I said is Dennis the caretaker? Dennis is 6.

Keith and Ray have a certain coolness about them - a bit rock star, muso type.

I know of someone who just called her baby Steve.

My (Catholic) middle school was called St Kevin's. I thought nothing of it at the time or for years afterwards but when I told my husband, casually in passing, he thought it was hilarious and asked me if he was the patron saint of shell suits.

One of our best friends is called Kevin, Neither DH or I drive, so he very kindly drove us to the hospital when I was in labour with DS2, he got us there just in time as he was born within the hour.

Anyway I think he was genuinely disappointed when we didn't call DS2 Kevin, but there was just no way that I could do that to my son, sorry Kev.

tethersend we have Angela/Angie on our list - I love it!
Dh would call a dd Susan.

Also love Malcolm, Norman, Graham. Raymond is ds's mn
Not sure the boys names go with our ds's lovely Hebrew names though!
Eli, Amos and Norman/Malcolm/Graham!!!! I know dh would love a Scottish name (he is Scottish), but I ought to stick with Hebrew. And Eli, Amos and Malcolm sounds a bit bizarre! But I lurve them!

Not sure about Kevin though! I have never known one in real life and it still seems a bif naf!

Sorry meant to say I never had a boy - however was brave enough to call my latest girl Veronica - despite a barrage of criticism on here and from friends.

Like it! may have been tempted but then had a boy. Reminds me of the Sadie & Kevin books I read as a young teenager at school - Really showing my age..

In Room at the Top (set in about 1960) the rich classy girl the hero ended up married to was called Susan.

Does this mean that names didn't have the same class connotations then that they do now?

(Mind you, that Susan's family was possibly a bit noove...)

in germany kevin was quite popular after the 'home alone' films.
it is a very chavvy name over there. when you hear a woman shouting the name on the playground you can be almost certain she carries an aldi bag with the sand pit toys, a can of pils and a fag.

If Mabel is now trendy I'm sure Kevin will be back soon.

I know a 6mo baby called Ray.

I find it strange to see younger Julies on US TV shows - eg the teenage Julie in Desperate Housewives. Half of our class was made up of Julies, Susans and Karens. Better than Fifi-snugglebum or some other made up name though :) (Just desperately, desperately dull, not even being a Jules makes it any better)

It's a generational thing, surely? To me (I am 51), names like Arthur and Dorothy seem hopelessly old-fashioned because that's what people in my grandparents' generation were called. But those names are now making a bit of a comeback, aren't they? Whereas names like Susan, Kevin and Nigel seem quite normal to me, as lots of people my age are called that. And I'm guessing that by the time my 5yo grandson has children (or grandchildren!), names like Sharon and Darren might well be back in fashion.
