What do we think? I don't like any of the longer names for Nellie so it would have to be just Nellie. I'm not keen on Ellie either.

Don't like it either - the drippiest, whiniest child in our post-natal group was called Nelly and it's really put me off!

Sorry I personally don't like it at all. Like others have said 'Nellie the elephant' comes to mind! And that brat from Little House on The Prairie, Nellie Olson.

Nell short for Helen is nice.

Have to say I LOVE the name Nell but then it is DD's name and she really suits it! We used it as a shorter version of Helen.

....the elephant definitely springs to mind!

Nell is very nice and Eleanor is a lovely elegant name, but Nellie, no.

No, a kitchen servant.

Also an elephant. My name is Eleanor and I was still nicknamed Nellie the Elephant despite not even being fat!

What about Nuala or Fionnuala with Nelly for short?

I like it. A friend's little girl is called nellie - think it's really sweet.

Nell is lovely and Nellie is sweet for a little girl. I'd go for Eleanor or similar and use Nellie/Nell for a shortening, personally.

Another vote for Nell rather than Nellie.

Yes, but Jesus is common in Spain...

branflake81 · 08/09/2008 15:13

It's quite common in France and short for Nelida.

Nelly is short for Helen.

My friend's daughter is called Aneila, nn Nell.
I love it.
However, Nelly made me think of the Elephant.

Report
Botbot · 08/09/2008 13:52

I'd spell it Nelly myself. It's the French way.
