I am religious and absolutely love this biblical name. What does the general public think and I know a lot Mumsnetters aren't Christians.

I like Boaz. I would probably assume that Boaz's parents were pretty devout, in a way I wouldn't for Noah or Ezra which are more popular.

LOVE it. I am a Christian though!

When a friend called their baby Boaz ("Bo") it was generally well received by unbelieving friends.

Only to their faces maybe 😄

I don't like it either.

I'm not religious but surely there are other biblical names? Others have mentioned Ezra, Caleb ( love that name), Noah, Joseph, Matthew?

I actually know a relatively recently born Boaz. I think it’s nice, but I hadn’t heard of it before that and did need telling it was a biblical name.

I'm a practising Christian and I do not like it at all.

I know a lot of Ezras. It's a very middle class-leafy-London name. I know one Boaz. The boys call him Bo-Ass but kids can be mean about nearly every name. Beau is a nice. Would that work?

I prefer Balonz

I know a few Zeke's short for Ezekiel. I quite like it and it's funny that Ruth is a mainstream name but not Boaz

I didn't use to be a fan of it, but we have a lovely boy at our church called Boaz and I feel much fonder of the name since I've got to know him.

Other suggestions that I think fit with the more mainstream feel of this country but are also religious

Ezra
Micah
Noah
Elijah

Put it down to pregnancy hormones. I suggested Ace for the list at one point. Glad my DP said absolutely not 😂

I like it (but I'm probably biased as DH and I had a reading from the Book of Ruth (1:16-17) for our wedding 🤗). Bo is particularly lovely.

I don’t think most people would think twice about it now there is such a large variety of names in use. Reminds me of a well known academic linguist but I think Boaz was his surname.
Its always a positive, in my view if you have a good reason for choosing a name and admiration for the character of the original Boaz is a great one.

I like it. I know one too. His parents have a mixture of cultural backgrounds so I had always assumed it was a name from another culture.

I've only ever met one, in Israel. I think there are better biblical names

Report
Adventing · 14/01/2023 16:04

I like, I've met two. Didn't know them well enough to know how their peers responded to their names though. It sounds similar to other popular biblical names imo, Noah, Ezra etc

I actually really like it and the biblical association is a good one.

I mean the letters are quite similar to Noah aren’t they?!

I’m sure there are. Like I said; I don’t know anyone with an Ezra. I didn’t say I don’t think they exist.

I don't know anyone with an Olivia. Name popularity is very odd

Ezra was very popular last year, just outside top 50!
There are dozens of them around

@steppemum
I am often baffled by the names that the mn jury likes and doesn't like, and it doesn't seem to bear any relationship to the people I know in the real world and their kids names.

Same. I don’t know a single person in real life who would call their child Boaz or Ezra

Bozo. No

I prefer its name cousin, ballonz.

Boaz is quite an important word in Freemasonry (which is religion based),

I don't like it to be honest, sounds a bit odd. He would be known as Bo, so Beau?
