Thoughts on Fletcher

What are your thoughts on the name Fletcher for a boy? Me and DH have just come across it and quite like it but have never met a Fletcher before, so we are curious about people’s associations with it.

I agree with the Fraser suggestions but unfortunately DH doesn’t like it. I’ll ask what he thinks of Buttfart though It’s been helpful to hear people’s associations with the name, thanks for your responses.

@BounceyBumblebee, OP asked for opinions so I gave mine honestly. If she'd phrased her question differentlyhi might have taken a more gentle approach. I'm perfectly well aware that it's a 'traditional English surname', it just happens to be one I don't find pleasant to hear or to look at written down. I'm allowed to say that.

Fletch in Holly city allow it's his surname I though Fletcher was his name. It's a no from me.

I don't think @DramaAlpaca is being particularly rude. The OP asked for opinions. Surely the reason people ask for opinions on mumsnet is that they know people are likely to be more honest than they would be in real life?

Anyway, Fletcher - I'm also not keen. I just don't like the sound, it's very harsh and reminds me of other unpleasant words - letch, retch, wretch etc. How about Fraser? Much softer sounding, but has a similar feel.

My first thought was Jessica Fletcher from "Murder, She Wrote". (showing my age!).

The name is fine. I'd put it in the same category as Finn, Finley.

I teach a teenager called Fletcher, now likes to be called Fletch as he has got older.
It’s unusual without being too out there. I like it, he likes it, it’s a cool name!

Round these parts Fletcher’s are blokes in their 50’s who arrive with a speedboat (normally a Fletcher speedboat) named Carpe Diem or Blue Moon on a trailer, reverse it into the sea (quite often damaging their car/ trailer/ someone else’s boat in the process) and then proceed to zoom round the bay listening to Bon Jovi, disturbing the wildlife and breaking all the bylaws. Normally accompanied by a wife in a tiny bikini.

I don’t especially like surnames as names but I don’t mind it, and Fletch is a nice nn (his peers will not watch prisoner cell block h!)

But - PPs comment that surnames used as first names, egRyan and Taylor have a tendency to go downmarket if they get popular would give me pause for thought though.

It's the name of Whitney Houstons's character's son in The Bodyguard. I rather like it. I don't normally like those kinds of names (Grayson, Cooper, Riley - bleugh) but I think Fletcher is nice.

I don't really like surnames as first names, but I've always loved Fletcher. I doubt any of his friends will have even heard of prisoner cell block h, so I wouldn't let that put you off if you love the name.
