It will be the most hipsterish thing you could do. No one is named Darren now. If you happen to have some girls too, call them Lisa and Joanne.

No Pencilvester I don't live in the U.K. Is that why I don't find the name unappealing?

Yep! Grin

This thread is funny. I wouldn't name my baby Darren if you paid me. 40 year old guy comes to mind, not a little baby. Perhaps find a similar name - not Darryl.

I know it's a really 70s name, but it must have ancient Welsh roots as there are loads of places round here ending in -darren or -darran eg Pen-y-darren.

I'm in Oz and there are 40 year old Dazzas everywhere

Me too. It'd be like calling your child Wayne or Bruce.

I'm in Oz and there are 40 year old Dazzas everywhere, so its a big nope from me too. And I have a similar dated 70s name which I hate so I get a vote. Dara is fine though if you're Irish.

Who am I kidding? I too seriously dislike Darren. (Raised in Essex in the 1980s). Croydon. Same era; same feelings. Grin

Reminds me of the sleazy fuck I know who left his wife and kids for her best mate

Irrelevant to OP, but in response to the Dowager, I know 4 girls under 5 named Elizabeth. My own DS would likely have been Elizabeth/Eliza/Lizzie, had he been a girl.

As for Darren - only if you're expecting to give birth to fully grown 50 year old man!

I have friends called it (70s child), and I can't deny that Darren is the most annoying person ever! And, yes, he's been to jail... Darron, on the other hand, is a sweetheart. What rhey do have in common though, regardless of spelling, is that all of them are over 45.

It's not associated with a TV character, it's just a (new-ish) name that had a surge in popularity at a point in time, and now sounds dated.

It's also not an established name. Established names tend to be perennially usable (these are few and far between*) or cyclical - going in an out of fashion (Michael, Victoria, Rachel, Simon and Peter being examples of the latter - all classic names, but out of fashion at the moment.

Darren is up there with Wayne, Lisa, Tania, Karen and Barry in their own category.

They had a high point in popularity, but don't have a classic status to fall back on, and so are heavily connected (which means: dated) to a specific era.

Just my opinion. I have a classic but cyclical name that was deeply unfashionable when I was given it in the 70s, but is back with a vengeance now.

*C/Katherine, Elizabeth, William and George are usually cited as such examples, but I don't think even these names are perennially classic. Hardly anyone calls their daughters Elizabeth or Catherine these days, and very few people called their boys William or George when I was little. Even Sarah goes in and out of fashion.

I don't understand all the negativity about the name Darren! Are you associating it with a tv character?

I know of 3 Darren's born in the last 2-3 years, I didn't bat an eyelid to the name.

Dara/Darragh is a popular name OP

Maybe the change in spelling helps 😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣😂😂😂

It's just so dated. This is what happens when a name becomes really trendy: it just sounds unbearably naff 20 years later. It's why I'm avoiding faddy names like Ethan and Evie: they are tomorrow's Darren!

Report
NotYoda · 18/03/2017 10:47

It's dated. It has connotations. But of course in theory it's just a word and one day it might have a resurgence

I've recently heard of a few Erics and Rays. Not so dissimilar

And who would have thought the Old Lady names would ever become fashionable; but they did

Mouthfulofquiz · 18/03/2017 10:46

I will go against the grain here and say that as a word, it has a lovely sound. One of the best people I know is called Darren so I like it!
