Of the two, I prefer Samuel.

I'm not keen on John, but I do like Jonathan.

John is the better of the two. I would second the suggestion of Johnathan and possibly also suggest mark?

I like both but I know many more Samuels of all ages than I do Johns. Maybe John is due for a comeback?

John - it's due a revival. And you can make it into Johnny, which is nice for a child.

Samuel (also on my list) but John is very nice as well

DS has the middle name John, as does DH and my d father (although df used it as his given name). I love it but I think Samuel John is a lovely name too.

both great names. If you have a longer surname, then John works better and vice versa.

Depends how much you like Sam. I don't, only because it's a unisex name!

Samuel
It's a great classic name I may be biased as mine is sitting next to me
But I do think John is a good strong name too

Both are great. Johnny is a great nickname. Sam too

We seriously considered Samuel for DS but I couldn't decide how to pronounce it - Sam-you-ell? Sam-yoll?
So I'd go with John because I know how to say it.

Samuel, but you can't go wrong with either

Both are lovely! (how helpful...)

I would have used John for a boy if it had gone with our surname, but it doesn't. I had girls though!

John - more unusual nowadays and although I would've said it was boring twenty years ago now it's quite fresh but still a classic.

John is fabulous.

John. I met a baby John recently and it was a nice surprise as the name is rarely used any more.

I think there was a thread recently asking the exact same thing - John vs Samuel
