Evelyn
Firstly do YOU pronounce it-
"eeeve-linn"
Or
"Ev-el-inn"
(The latter is what I like)
Is it cute/ old/ crap/ lovely/ nice?
Honest thoughts please.

Unusual?! Every other child is called Evelyn - Eve for short. Honestly don't do it. Several friends have name regret about this one as hadnt realised how popular. Its equivalent to the name "Sarah" for a 40 something.

I like it. Much better than Evie which is just so popular now.

It's nice, but I automatically say it with 2 syllables Blush

I always have to think twice about Ever-lin versus Eeever-lin. And I used to work with a horrible Evelyn who was nicknamed Evil-Lyn...

Love it. My friend has an Evelyn (pronounced Ev-elin) and calls her Linnie for short, which I think is cute.

I would assume it was a girl's name. Evie is a really popular name - and lots of similar names like Edie, Eva, Ellie etc - so it's taken the shine of Evelyn for me although it is a beautiful name.

There are loads of them. Not unusual any more.

That's a really lovely traditional and yet unusual name xx

I think it's pretty, but would avoid it if it's only to give her the inevitable desperately popular nickname Eve or Evie...

In our family it's E-ve-lyn but I rather like it as Eve-lyn.

My friends daughter is Evelyn as in Eeeeve-Lin. My nan was Evelyn as in Eva-Lyn. I like both.

I have a good friend from school called Evelyn and she is delighted that her name is becoming more and more popular. She pronounces it Ev-lin.

I love the name.

Never know how to pronounce it.
Don't like the Eve-Lin pronunciation, it's sounds harsh but I quite like ev-el-lyn, sounds much prettier and more feminine

Love it and I don't think it would necessarily be shortened. If it is, I think (with the pn you are going for), it's more likely to be 'Ev' than 'Eve'.

KERALA1 · 25/09/2016 22:12

No. One to avoid. She will be another eve. Eve, as a name, is officially full. Most of the girls in dds class are named a variant of eve - gets very confusing any charm this name had has drained away through over use.

I know an Ev lyn who is female. I like it but I would never use it for a boy with that spelling.

Report
CPtart · 25/09/2016 18:53

It's lovely in its entirety, but there are millions of Evie's, Eva's, etc, so I would use it on the proviso it's never shortened. Which is difficult with peers once at school.

I have an aunt and a great aunt both called Evelyn. Pronounced Ev-el-in.

Lovely name.

I was going to post about Evelyn Waugh's first wife being called Evelyn, but someone beat me to it!

Beautiful name. We were going to call a girl Evelyn but we had a boy. We pinched the idea from the character from Pearl Harbour. Its a traditional name that seems to hav

I think it is pretty and elegant. Would not be sure on whether to pronounce Eve-a-lyn or Ev-a-lyn, i personally like both pronounciations
