Agree with elQuinti tbh. Pistorius definitely doesn't spring to mind when I hear Oscar. I'd sort of forgotten he is called Oscar tbh. You hear him referred to as "Pistorius" a lot I think.

I really don't like Oscar. It just doesn't seem like a boys name to me and is really harsh sounding.

Freddie is too cutesy. I prefer Oscar.

And I know you can shorten to Fred. I once knew a bloke at uni (and he was a bloke, tall and burly) called Bob. Later discovered his given name was Bobbie, which REALLY didn't suit him. Especially with the "ie" instead of a "y", which is more twee somehow.
