Friend is pregnant with a boy and has chosen the name Alex. Her Dd is called Alice.

I think they are way too similar but am not mentioning it because it's not my business is it? She asked me if I liked the name and I said yes because I do but I wouldn't use it with Alice as a sibling.

I don't think sibling names have to 'go' together but I do think you should try and avoid confusion by not using similar names.

So 2 questions. :

  1. Does anyone else think the same as me?
  2. I'm doing the right thing not mentioning anything aren't I? (Disclaimer ; she's an old friend but not a best friend)

I know siblings called Maia and Micah, their dad has joked in retrospect that it can seem like a bad idea at times but that he must really like those sounds.
Personally, if somebody was talking about doing something like this I might make a jokey comment about needing to enunciate clearly, but only lightheartedly. (Of course Alice and Alex are two of my favourite names, so it might be something I'd accidentally do.)

I used to teach two sisters called Natalie and Natasha. Also two called Serena and Sabina. Very confusing, particularly as they looked quite similar. Do people not see how similar the names are before they choose them?

No she isn't a very close friend and I think maybe her husband is choosing the new name and tbh she won't hear a word against him and she will definitely take it as a criticism. I might try and say something in a roundabout jokey kind of way without it being obvious. I probably might not.

I know she's not keen on my kids names but she's never said anything I can just tell.
