Is Posy more of a "real" name than Poppy?

Not even pg but last time I loved the name Poppy but just couldn't shake the feeling it was a bit cutesy for a grown up and not quite a "proper" name. (Don't mean to insult any Poppy parents, just my feeling). Also loved Penelope but DH vetoed it.

Heard Posy yesterday and for some reason I think this would be much more acceptable on a grown woman but i don't know why! Maybe coz it's like Rosie?

Thoughts?

Posy is far cutesier and a lot less grown up sounding. I'm not a fan of Poppy (still a bit too ickle wickle cutesy wootsy), but it wins out for me.

Posy is cutesier. Neither seem names for a grown up to me.

I don't like Posy at all. Poppy is nice.

Like a posy of flowers? You cannot be serious?

I think Poppy sounds much better on an adult.

I went to school with a girl named Posey. In her case it was a shortening of Rosemary.

I love both, but agree that both are quite cutesy and probably more suited to younger children.

Try imagining you child as an adult with a variety of jobs - could you imagine a Posy/Poppy as a manager in a big business, as a member of parliment, a teacher, etc.

I do adore the name Posy (It reminds me of the film Ballet Shoes which i love) but it does have the perception of being a bit silly which may lead to teasing (Posy...Unfortunate, but true)

Posy is tradionally a shortening of Josephine.

Poppy is a flower name.

So, I would say Poppy is more a "real" name than Posy.

I, personally, don't like either, much, but you probably wouldn't like my choices much, either. Wink

My DD is Posy. We completely love it but it attracts a bit of a marmite reaction. It's not a popular name on MN though. Meh. Call your baby a name you love. You're never going to please everyone and why should you. Flowers

Poppy is much more acceptable for a grown up than Posy. Posy is too cutesy by far.

I think Poppy and Posy are on equal footing in the cutesy stakes.

Poppy is more grown up but too popular atm.

I went to school with a Fleur Posy (I kid you not). Went by Posy. Didn't seem unusual to any of us kids.

I don't find Poppy cutesy at all - it's quite a hard sound, when you think about it.

Posy, on the other hand, is a saccharine sing-song nickname type name (usually starting off as Rosy-posy or Josie-posy) and I can think of few names that sound more twee.

Posy is very cutesy and probably wouldn't suit a grown woman too well. Poppy is better (I know on on her late 30's and it suits her). Posy also reminded me of Ballet Shoes...

No, I think Poppy is much more grown up. There's a Posy at a group I go to and I did think I couldn't imagine that on a grown up.

But then I had a word with myself and realised there are plenty of baby names I could say the same about, and by the time all the Posys of today are grown up it will be a perfectly normal name for a grown up.

I am another who thinks "unfortunate, but true" about Posy. Sweet as a nn on a small baby, slightly silly on an adult woman.

Sorry I think posey is quite a silly sounding name

DD goes by Posey, short for Josephine, but she is only 10 months and I never introduce her as Posey. I don't think we'll use it as she gets older, but it suits her now as she's all round and pink. We liked Josephine as there are so many potential diminutives - Posey, Jo, Josie, Seph - as she gets older

Posy is awfully cutsie for anyone beyond the age of twelve or so. As an adult I'd hate to have that kind of name, it'd make me cringe everytime I met someone knew and had to introduce myself. It can be a nickname for Josephine though, although I much prefer Josie.

I think as an adult i'd rather be called Posy than Poppy but I have to say i'd rather have an elegant serious name than either of them.

Report
Sophronia · 28/02/2016 14:33

I think both of them are too cutesy for a grown woman
