You can't reclaim it any more than Adolf IMO.

Love it. And love it as a full name, wouldn't put Margaret on the birth cert.

I love it! Agree that now it's time to forget about Thatcher and reclaim Margaret as a classic and versatile name.

Maggie is such a gorgeous name.

Love it. Pretty much 95% certain it will be any future DD's name. But it would be Margaret, as we like longer names and day-to-day short versions.

I love it. Could defo see a wee Maggie running about the place. Would go for a argot as a FN though, which is ace in its own right too.

I love it.

I m not brave enough to use it though

I like it and like previous posters think Margot as the full name (Maggie as nn) is cool!

Ironically, Margaret Thatcher was never known as Maggie by people she had actually met, family and friends etc., apparently.

I'm not fond of it anyway, it has a harsh sound somehow. Margaret is a little better (and classic, of course).

Love it

Love it. But we couldn't get over the Thatcher links and for that reason we couldn't bring ourselves to use it :(

Think it's definitely time for some rehabilitation of this name though.

Agh no it's too soon to revive it.

Thatcher has ruined it for a few more generations yet.

I dislike Margot and much prefer Margaret. For a nickname I'd probably go for Meg or Greta.

Thatcher, Thatcher, milk snatcher.

Sorry OP, I don't think it'll ever lose these connotations as long as there are people who remember her.

It would get more than a few raised eyebrows here in County Durham due to the Thatcher connection but I do like it.

Secretlove · 20/02/2016 13:25

I really dislike it and would hate to be called Maggie myself. It seems old fashioned even for the one middle aged Maggie I know.

Report
TaraBoxBrain · 20/02/2016 21:07

I think it's the opposite of harsh, kind of soft and lovely, a bit like Molly. I like it.

GloryGrant · 20/02/2016 21:08

I love it, I also love Meggie which was my grandmother's name.

Rough and nasty. It's a no from me (but that might be a generational thing since I remember Thatcher too clearly).

Love it. Sounds feisty and fun and intelligent. Maggie Gyllenhal? I think the Maggie Thatcher thing is long gone. But then we have a Margot so I may be biased.

Btw I also think calling a little girl Margaret (nn Maggie) now would be very cool and way ahead of the game in terms of names that are soon to come back around. Margaret is fantastic for a girl in her 20s! Or it will be in a few years time - that's my prediction.
