One of my DDs is Evelyn (Ev-eh-lin) and we call her Evie interchangeably with her longer name.

The author Waugh was Eev-lin; his first wife was Ev-lyn. That must have been confusing.

I know two aged 6, in the same class at school, both pronounced Ev-uh-lin, neither shortened to Eve.

I thought it was a unisex name, with differing pronunciation according to sex. Girls are called Ev-uh-lin and boys are called Eev-lin, as in Evelyn Waugh.

If popularity doesn't bother you - go for it its a nice name. Personally having a super popular name myself I didn't want that for my DDs. However I didnt know many people with babies or small children and liked the name Olivia thinking there weren't many when I was at school. Had a lucky escape as realised a week before the birth that everyone else had the same idea and Olivia the number one name for babies born that year. Felt had a lucky escape so hope this thread has helped you out

I have a 13 week old Evelyn, we pronounce it Ev-ah-lin but sometimes people pronounce it Eve-lin and I don't mind too much, hopefully my Evelyn won't mind either. When she's bigger she can pronounce it how she wants. We do shorten it to Evie, but again, when she is older it'll be up to her what she calls herself.

I have had loads of compliments about her name, I think it is definitely getting more popular though. That doesn't bother me at all, IMO it is a gorgeous name

I did realise after naming dd that I'd given her a lifetime of correcting people and not finding any item with her name on just like I had. I don't think I am/was too bothered about not having named items growing up in the 70's but it is wearing that people always pronounce or spell your name wrong, still love her name though.

To me it will forever be a boy's name (Evelyn Waugh) but I do know two little girls under two called it. One pronounced Ev-Lin and the other Eve-Lin

We have an Evelyn 2012 pronounced Eve-lyn don't know anyone else under 60 with the name, but we wanted an old lady name ;-) God help anyone who says Evie though as I hate it, don't mind Eve.

KERALA that's why I like it too, it's affectionate and sounds as though the person is comfortable with you. I always go by the shortened version of my full name - growing up it was only ever the long, full version when I was in trouble. However, I've known my sister in law for over 30 years and she never ever calls me by my shortened name, it's always the long version. Probably speaks volumes for our relationship

I quite like the shortening of names - total opposite to belinda. Sounds affectionate when dcs friends shorten their names. Know some parents of little children who insist on the long versions at all times (eg Benjamin never ben). Good luck with that as they get older!

Mitzy that's very true! Both of my sons have the shortened versions of longer names, the shortened versions are on their birth certificates, and people who we/they don't know so well call them by the long version (naming one Sam and people calling him Samuel - not outing myself, that's just an example). They even both received personalised Christening gifts with the wrong and longer name on, despite invitations going out with their correct ones on.

My mum, great grandmother and cousin are/were all called Evelyn. When my cousin was born in the early 90's, it was very unusual/unpopular. But in the past couple of years Evelyn's are popping out of the woodwork left, right and centre! I know numerous girls under 5 with Evelyn either as a first or middle name. And most of them appear to be shortened to Evie. So, no it's definitely not unusual now!

Tri I don't mind it if children themselves want to shorten their names. It's the assumption on here that every name has to have a NN or be shortened.

When someone posts a selection of baby names - it's always like

Belinda NN Bel or Linda
Charlotte NN Lottie or Charlie etc etc

Nobody ever seems to call them by the actual names. That's why I gave my Dcs names that can't be shortened

We call her Evelyn, but her friends shorten it to Ally at her request. It's not like it is something I can police...

It's not popular around here at all atm. Never heard of a child called it. Only Evelyns I know are at least in their 50s.

Why, oh why, does everyone have to shorten names - Evelyn, not Eve, Evie - LEAVE NAMES ALONE

I have a nearly 6 year old one and know several others of various ages.

It is very popular, but dd has attended 3 schools so far (dh's job means we move a lot) and she has always been the only Eve variant in her class, so don't let that put you off.
