Mikey?

Hi, I really like Mikey, but not as much Michael as I think its a little dated. Also hate Mike! Would I be mad to use Mikey with those factors?
Also like Jake, Rowan and Nate. Any thoughts?
Just hypothetical for now Wink

Mikey is awful, Mickey isn't much better. I know an eight year old given name Mikey. It sounds very very working class. That might not matter to you but it may matter to him.

I'd put Michael on the birth cert

Mícheál is the Irish spelling of Michael, so not always a misspelling. I guess this can cause confusion if people don't notice the accents.

Should have said the Micheal I know is from Florida - no Irish background (I honestly think his parents just got it wrong). I told this guy that Michael was spelled "Mícheál" in Irish so in future he could just say "Irish spelling actually".

I knew a man who was Mikey into his 20s, maybe later. It really suited him. Very professional, btw.

Oh god please don't call a child mikes. DHs cousin did and he's grown now and it's awful. It was always awful tbh - after boy zone I think. Michael is a lovely name, lots of nickname options, but mikey on the birth certificate?

Eurghhh.

DB is Michael and was Mikey as a boy. It just doesn't suit a grown man, so he is Mick or Mike now, a choice he made at about 13. Mikey may sound a bit twee as a 50 year old professional, for example.

I would go full name on birth cert. have you considered Irish version of Michael - micheal (mee haul)

Canyou - I'm not actually sure. I think he is actually Michael, but has always been known as Mikey.

It's also worth bearing in mind that with a full name like Michael or William, you can be different things to different people. I have a cousin named Michael, and we as a family have always called him Mike or Michael. However his friends and workmates all know him as Mick. My aunt doesn't like Mick as a nn, but it doesn't matter because she rarely crosses paths with his mates.

As a nickname it's fine, but I'd be wary of imposing it as a given name. It's a derivative of Michael/Micheal, and I think I would stick with that, but refer to my child as Mikey until such time as he said he didnt like it.

I know someone who was Mick, Mikey, Mike and various other forms, but now prefers Michael.

I also know of someone called Billy. Not William, Billy. He hates it.

How can you love Mikey but hate Mike? Confused

Report
addictedtosugar · 01/08/2015 10:12

Not sure what his full name, but I know a 40 YR old mechanic called Mikey.
Think you need a slightly less nickname birth cert name tho, and if you hate Mike, I wouldn't do it.

Other names all fine. Personally wouldn't use Rowan, as I know a female, and a family with it as a surname, but that's personal.

It's an old classic but still around. I have a 9 month old Michael but he's called Mickey or Mick at the moment.

Thanks. It's actually my friend who is pregnant and she suggested Mikey and was asking my opinion. I said I liked it but as it was a bit different I thought would put it to the Mumsnet jury Grin. The others are saved away as my choices if I have a DS.
My friends other choices are Ruari, Dylan and Finn which are all nice names and not controversial, I wonder what she will go for!

My cousin is Mikey; he's now in his twenties and still Mikey.

But if his name is Mikey of course he is still Mikey. What other choice would he have?

Do you mean your cousin is Michael, always called Mikey and still clalled Mikey in his twenties - very different.

He will have a lifetime of people presuming he is Michael with nickname of Mikey and putting his name in cvs and forms etc as Michael.

Well maybe not - times change.

I know someone called Micheal - he spends his life correcting people who correct the spelling. It is a real pain.

Honestly I wouldn't give any child, male or female a name which is still considered a nickname (Mikey, Joey etc). But I do realise that there are loads of parents who feel differently.

Jake and Nate are also shortened names but have moved further into the name arena than Mikey has imo.

Of all the names, I like Nate the best.

Michael is a good, solid name, but Mikey wouldn't suit an adult man.

IMO even if you name him Mikey, when he gets older people will just call him Mike anyway so if you don't like that, then I would not go with it.

I always prefer to give them longer traditional names and let them make their own mind up as they grow.

It'll always be Mikey from Boyzone to me (thanks to my sister's massive crush and posters everywhere). I quite like it though. My favourite from your list is Jake.

No. You're thinking of a baby, not a person. It's a cutesy nickname, give the child a proper name and use whatever nickname you like.
