Baby names

Scarlett, Amelia, Evelyn or Caitlin? Worried they will become "dated" names.

I would like opinions on these names for my DD! I worry that all of them will "date" IYSWIM?

My DP likes Scarlett the most. I did really like it but I am worried it sounds harsh and will date the most.

Amelia I like but it is the top name in the UK so we will come across many Amelias.

Evelyn I like but I prefer the short NN Evie - obviously there are loads of little Evies around these days.

Caitlin I like but I am just unsure.

Any opinions or suggestions? Thanks Smile

Scarlett's really popular and has been for about seven years, in Liverpool.

You can't go anywhere and not run into a Scarlett, I'm only saying this, in case your DP thinks it's a unused name.

I have a baby relative called that and she really suits it, she's been headstrong since birth.

I think that you will be able to put a time frame on many names being chosen and suggested across this Forum, especially coupled with accents.

Thanks for your views. I suppose any name will date eventually so it is unavoidable. Still not sure on a bloody name, DP still really wants Scarlett though Confused this was so much easier with my DS!

I love Scarlett.

So what if someone's name gives their rough age away, their face does as well.

Jennifer very 80s, really? Hmm It was very popular 30 years earlier. I was at school in the 60s and 70s, and there were loads of Jennifers.

Yep, they all will date. I'd say Caitlin is already dated. Not a disaster though, unless you're trying to be original.

I think Caitlyn will date least. But all names date. I'm Jennifer, it's just sooo 80s, and my school friends, Emma, Sarah and Michelle, ditto. My mums friends, Dawn, Karen and Tracy, no doubting their age ranges!

Evelyn is a beautiful name. My grandma was called Evelyn, I don't think of it as a 'current' name at all!

They all scream early 2000's to me. I wouldn't call any of them timeless.

But as someone else said, there are always names which giveaway the decade of birth of the person so don't get too hung up on that.

It's already quite a popular name though, in various spellings. There's a Catelyn in Game Of Thrones.

I think people will see it more and it'll be more in the public consciousness!

Personally I like Scarlett. It's maybe past its peak, but that's not really a bad thing. Means you won't have any in her peer group. I think Vivian Leigh so it's a positive name for me!

I'd vote Evelyn or Caitlyn.

Caitlyn. Bruce for short.

Mine's an Amelia and about to start school. None other in her class so don't be put off by perceived popularity. 'Tis beautiful (biased Grin).

"Caitlin / Caitlyn might jump in popularity due to Caitlyn Jenner being in the papers all the time"

You think so? I reckon it would have the opposite effect.

I think Evelyn is the most timeless of your names. They're all nice though :)

Are there any similar names that you like, that are less now?

Amanda
Carolyn
Roslin

I share your unease with Scarlett. There's just something a bit off that I can't quite put my finger on. Perhaps it's the 'scar'.

Thanks for all your opinions, it is very helpful. I have been thinking so much about names my brain is all a scramble! Helps so much to have other views.

From your list, I'd say Evelyn is the least unlikely to date as its a classic name, although the NN Evie is very of its time.

Amelia is too popular and will very much link to a particular decade like Jack or Olivia 10 years ago.

Caitlin is a lovely name, I've never met any Caitlins over the age of 10 and met many younger so another popular name of now but seems like a quite classic sounding name.

Dislike Scarlett, to me it just sounds made up although it is another name which is very much in vogue.

Caitlin is already quite dated IMO as it was a very popular name in the 90s and early-mid 00s.

My favourite is Evelyn, lovely name!

Evelyn and Scarlett will date most. But Amelia will also scream a certain decade from its sheer popularity.

I think I'm inclined to say if you don't love it, you haven't found the one yet. One will eventually just feel right.

Scarlett will be the most likely to date there. Amelia and Evelyn are more classic, and safer even when popularity wanes.

I don't think it matters if names date. I'm in my late 30s and know a whole load of Claires, Rachels, Allisons and Kates. All very much names of the 70s, but as we are all on our 30s together it doesn't really matter.

All of those names are lovely. I particularly like Caitlin, and I think you're most likely to come across a lot of Evies and Amelies or variations of.

Just go with the name you love the most.
Fwiw I don't like Caitlin or Evelyn (or evie), Scarlett is ok and I love Amelia.
