Baby names

Finn, Zac or Theo

Hi everyone
I think I'm addicted to starting new name threads! Anyway thanks in advance for your comments- and for all the ones on my other threads!
My son will be a quarter Irish and a quarter Jewish. I like Finn because it's Irish and is a name I like and I like Zachary/ Zac which I think is a Hebrew name. Also like Theo. Which do you like best and why?

I love Finn. If I'd had a DS4 he'd have been Finn assuming I could've got DH to agree, which is unlikely

Finn makes me think of fish, dislike.
Theo is nice
Zac is a funky boys name and not heard of as much.

I like all three but I think I like Finn best.

Finn. I only know 1 in DS whole school. Baby name popularity really does depend where you live.

Thanks everyone! Think I'm no clearer though! :)

Theo, especially if you don't want a name that's been medium-popular for a good few years.

I like all of them, I have a 15 yr old theo(Dore) he has always been the only one at school.

I know a couple of finns, finlays all primary age. Ditto Zach, but it's not hugely popular. I recentky met a toddler called theo.

They are all nice names that are not too popular. :)

Finn must have regional pockets, because it's popular around here (London). It strikes my ear as trendy, I much prefer Theo.

I like Finn.
love Zac but not keen on Zachary prefer Zacharia x

Can't beat anecdotes and personal experience! Wink Theo and Zachary are actually more popular than Finn and Finlay statistically speaking.

Not likely to be packed with Finbars either. Not a name that is very popular at all.

Of course I'm not teaching at every school in the country! I was teaching in one school until last July where there were lots of Finns and Finlays. I then moved to another school this academic year where there are again several Finlays and Finleys. My children go to another school and I can think of 6 Finlays/Finns there (out of 450 kids, admittedly). I have two close friends from an out-of-school school context with boys called Finlay. By contrast, there is 1 single Theo in the school I teach in. There was 1 single Theo in my last school. There are two at my kids' school. And there are no Zacharys or Zacs currently in any of the three schools, although there was a 'Zack'.
That said, Finn probably isn't as popular as Harry/Oliver/Thomas, but OP wasn't asking about those. I am only relating my experience!

But unless you're teaching at every primary school in the country you can't know. I've just had a look at the 2014 top baby names and Finn is at 69, down from last year. In fact apart from Harry and Noah, I would say that I don't know of more than one child with any name in the top 20. This is consistently the case, I think I live somewhere where people avoid very popular names (still waiting to come across a Jack or Olivia), also it's very multicultural.

I just think it's a very sweeping statement to make.

I like them all Smile . There have been several Finns in my son's year group (he's 6). I only personally know one Zachary and one Theo but I see them referred to a lot on here. The only one that goes with Christian as a middle name is Theo. All are ok with your surname.

Zac or Theo. I like all three though, I know less Finn's than the other 2. Theo is hugely popular where I am, I know 2 under 1 and another that's not been born yet Grin

Zachary...has Hebrew roots and means "God has remembered".
I'm biased though, I have a scrummy 4 yo one Smile
He insists on being called Zachary and not Zach.

RiverTam, I'm a teacher; that's 'how on earth' I know. Why would I make it up that primary schools are full of Finns?! I have nothing to gain or lose from the OP's choice. I'm just stating that Finn is an extremely popular name currently. And I'm certainly not the only poster to have observed this.

Zac or Finn - both lovely

Report
shitebag · 10/06/2015 00:10

I like them all but wouldn't use Finn or Zac because they are very popular here, we know six Finn's between 2 and 9 years and four Zac's under 3. Having made that mistake with my eldest I wouldn't opt for a common name again!

I don't think that Christian goes with any of them though.

Rhubarbgarden · 09/06/2015 22:07

Zac Christian doesn't really work because of the repeated c sound - the end of Zac gets lost. Finn Christian sounds like 'thin Christian'.

Sorry.

Casey - He's 8 months and we've not met another in baby groups or in his 2 week hospital stay after birth. I've got older nieces and there's one Finn at 5 yo nursery. We've just got DS nursery sorted and they've never had a Finn

Millions of Finns and Theo's at the moment.
Zachary is nice.
