Baby names

Rudolf?

We have a baby name list attached to our fridge and whenever a name comes to us that we love we just pop it on the list to revise and discuss at a later date (usually after gender scan). This is a new experiment for us and seems to be working pretty well.

This morning, I came down for breakfast and glanced at the fridge and saw DH had written "Rudolf(ph?)" on the paper... the worst thing is my mind isn't screaming no!

Please remind me why it's a bad idea?!

Oh and we live in Germany so it's actually a classic name here... I really need to stop convincing myself!

There is a Rodolph Austin who plays for Leeds. He is Jamaican. And often announced as Rudolph.

I know a Rudy, short for Rufus. His baby sister calls him Roo which I think is just adorable.

What about Ranulph? I like it a lot.

Well, in the end, if you like it, go for it! It is a classic name and has a cute nickname attached. It won't be a problem name in Germany, I think, and if you have 6 older children then that might be enough threatening siblings to scare away any bullies anyway.

I prefer the spelling Rudolph but I guess that is the "reindeer spelling" whereas Rudolf is the "holy roman emperor" spelling. Spelling is trivial anyway.

I don't think I'd use it for my own DC ( I'm not brave enough ) but I do quite like it. Smile

Rudy/Rudi also has an ACE song attached to it. Much better than Rudolph's.

Rudi reminds me of the cheeky boy from The book thief. But it's a better alternative to Rudolf...

Can't believe I'm actually thinking of Rudolf. .

I think it's a great name, who cares if it's in a song? It's not like naming him Santa.

Now, I do like Rudi! :)

and I do prefer the ph spelling. Dammit.

What about a middle name? Would that change opinions/dislike of the name?

Baby is due mid January.

RiverTam that's how you spell the reindeer name!!

It's not as bad as calling your son Kermit, but it's not far off it.

Would work fine in other countries though I'm sure.

I knew a (Dutch, but living in England) Rudolph who was always Rudi. I think it's only a definite no in British culture, isn't it?

RiverTam · 25/07/2014 10:37

I like it, and I like Rudy/Rudi as a NN. If it's a not-unusual name where you live then go for it! Maybe spell it Rudolph to get away from the reindeer connotations?

If you don't like Rudolf what about Rudi?

My ds4 is Rudi and he likes to call himself Rudolf sometimes, he lives that his name is similar to it! Loves the reindeer connection! He us 6.
