I don't know why, i just really like this name and am considering it as a potential name for dc2, ( although only 15 weeks so don't know if it is a boy or a girl yet.)

Thing is, i've had very negative reactions from friends, who say it is very chav.

Anybody want to tell me my friends are wrong and its a lovely name, or is it back to the drawing board ?

I like it, sounds a bit dainty but also kind of pretty. I don't like the nicknames though- Crys/Cryssy etc;

Unless your giving birth to a mini stripper, when I hear the name Crystal I see tacky, mad orange tan, long fake nails, overly bleached hair, overly plucked eyebrows dancing for her money!

No, don't like it. Very Dynasty.

Def nay. Very dated.

It sounds like a My Little Pony. So, no. And I'm the daft person who during pregnancy thought Rainbow and Meteor would be great names for kids (I didn't obvs).

If you really wanted you could use Christina (totally sensible) and have Crystal as a nn?

Nay nay and thrice NAY!

I know a girl called Sapphire though, she's not a stripper.

What about Pearl?

I know a former Krystal, she changed her name to Kate as soon as she was legally able to. She was teased relentlessly up to then.

I know a brilliant woman named Crystal. She graduated with honors, works for one of the biggest media companies in the world, is a globe trotter and makes an astronomical salary. And she's only 28! And gorgeous. (Of course.) Her success has certainly not been hampered in any way by being named Crystal. That being said, she was born in the 80s in the US, when the name was in the top 20 and seen as super stylish. From reading this thread and looking at stats that sentiment has certainly changed! Ah, fashion.

There's a mum called Krystle at one of my local playgroups. I thought it was a curious spelling but didn't figure out the Dynasty connection until now!

Sorry - stripper or hooker to me

^^
This

Yes in an ideal world people wouldn't be judged on their name, but until that time comes Crystal really wouldn't help a child's life chances

Christabel?

Crystal is very of it's time.

Sorry, it's chavvy. Know quite a few Crystal/Krystal/Christal/Kristal, etc. (I'm American) and it's just not a nice name.. Sorry OP.

I'd forgotten all about Christa Wolf who I loved as a teenager. I agree with Christa or Christabel.

As a child back in the Dynasty-era '80s I desperately wanted to be called Crystal - it seemed so exotic and glamorous compared to my own name. Now, though, it just seems tacky and brash (particularly after all those Cristal champagne song references!)

Agree that Christa is a nice alternative. (I studied German at university, and Christa Wolf is indeed a great author!) Or Christina's pretty too.

Agree the french version is nice.

Report
DramaAlpaca · 31/03/2014 15:33

How about the French version, Christelle?

It sounds much classier.

Report
Needaninsight · 31/03/2014 15:33

Incredibly chavvy, but I knew a gorgeous little girl called Krystal. She was from a 'chavvy' background, but didn't stop her being gorgeous!

Your call. Although I think Christina would be a better option
