Baby name regret

My dd2 is now 2 and half weeks old and I just cant get used to her name , I find myself calling her by nicknames . I worry the name is for lack of a better word "Chavvy.
We had 2 names choose before she was born but she didnt suit either of them , dh choose her name when she was 4 days old he loves it.
Basically just wanting to know if anyone has felt this way? did you grow to love the name ?

Emmie is a lovely name and I don't think it would hold her back at all. I love Emmeline so why not change the birth certificate to give her a longer name incase she goes on to be a High Court Judge Grin

I think emmie is a lovely name! When I names my daughter I pretty much regretted it straight away. It didn't help that people also kept mispronuncing it! Oh didn't really like her name either but had to go along with what I picked as we couldn't agree on a name and time had run out to register her. When she was 11 months old I asked him of we should change it and he said no. Fast forward 3 years and everyone has gotten used to the name and I definately no longer regret it. I'm also happy I didn't change it. For the people who mispronunce it I just tell them the shortened version of her name which is Allie. Its in the top 50 names in America but over here its not a common name. Seeing as she's just a few weeks you have 12 months to change her name on the birth certificate if you wish. In all honesty though I would leave it...and don't worry about the name not suiting her, she will grow into it x

Ps listen to the song Emmy-Lou by First Aid Kit - one of my favourite songs and the main reason I have good connotations for Emmie (albeit spelling is different)

I personally really like Emmie! But I am pretty sure you can change a first name after registration relatively easily provided it is within 12 months. I like the suggestion of changing it to Emily so she can have a classic and timeless name for anything official and a trendy shortened nickname for friends.

Best of luck making your decision. Either way she has a great name!

I had wobbles for the first month about my DD's name. It wasn't helped by the fact that NOBODY said anything like "that's lovely" when we told them. I really thought I had made a mistake. She's almost a year old now and just IS the name. I'm so glad I chose it. I think the hormones racing around your body at this stage make you anxious.

FWIW I think Emmie is a lovely name Smile

I like Emmie too. I'd have thought it's unusual but not made up.

I changed DD's name after registering, it doesn't require deed poll unless you wait until 1.

I dislike 'nickname' type names, but other than that Emmie is fine.

In your position I would tell my husband that although Emmie is a nice name, you want to give her more options for when she is older, and change her official name to a longer form.

I know two women called Emmie - one is really Emma, the other Emmeline. No-one could ever accuse those names of being chavvy. Other options might be Emily or Emilia (or the slightly more 'out there' Ember or Emerald).

I knew an Emmeline who was an Emmie.
It's a useful longer name: you might prefer to call her Mel, Lina, Em, Nina - lots of choices. And your dh still gets to call her Emmie.

Trust me, you'll end up calling her what she likes to be called anyway once she can talk!

My babies are 12 and 8 and there is still the odd time when I repeat their names a few times in my head and they don't seem real! I love Emmie. Its a beautiful name. I don't know any others. I love ds name but there are 3 in his class. DDs name was less popular 12 years ago but there are loads of them now! Everything is new to you now, give it a wee bit more time.

You have a year to change their name - I did with dd. Nothing wrong with their first given name I just realised it was a bit dull and really didn't suit them. It was chosen as a name that was safe rather than one we loved. Changed it at 9 months - easy to do - and now she couldn't be anything else. No regrets at all.

I like Emmie, fwiw I'd probably have gone for a longer name on the BC (probably Emmeline, I love that name. But it's fine as it is and certainly not chavvy

FWIW I like Emmie and don't think it'll hold her back, if that's your only concern than you shouldn't change. But actually if it just doesn't feel right then I'm going to go against the grain. If you hate it, change it, and the sooner the better. My friend called her DS one name for 2 weeks then changed it. He's 10 now and I can't imagine him being the first name.

You don't need to do deed poll. IIRC you can change first names quite easily, I think for up to a year. (Can anyone confirm this?)

Do you like any names which could have Emmie as a NN?

Emily
Emmeline
Jemima
Amelia
Emerald
Ember
Emer

Thanks Congratulations on the birth of your DD!!!

This is controversial, OP, and I'm obviously in the minority because everyone else loves it, but I'm with you on your initial gut instinct.

I agree with what you originally said about the name.

I hope it's OK to be honest on here.

If I were you, I'd put it out there as a 'we are undecided, please give us your honest opinions on this name as a possibility...' type of thread to get a more honest picture.

I suspect, that because your DD is already here, and because your DH loves it, you are only getting responses from people who like the name, and that those who don't like it are opting out of posting so as not to offend you.

I hope I'm wrong, and that I'm the only mner who agrees with you...I do think it sounds a bit chavy though, sorry.

Emmie is a lovely name, I had major doubts about my ds name just like yourself but looking back I think it was my hormones, I wanted to text everyone we knew to tell them his middle name was now his first name, so glad DH talked me out of it.

Thanks for all nice comments on the name If it survives mumsnet it might survive the real world ;) , I dont know about changing it dh would be gutted I think I will give it a few weeks as everlong suggested. Tbh there is no name I can think of to change it too anyway it just feels fake calling her Emmie but hopefully thats just the novelty of it all.

I think most names sound wrong on babies! It takes a long time for them to grow into it. But I think once other people start talking to you and referring to her by her name, it sort of sounds right, and one day it clicks, this is your baby, and this is what she is called. After a while you just dont query what they are called - they have become their name! Both my girls I felt didnt suit their name when they were born - they are grown up now, and I really like their names - and more to the point, so do they!! I think you just need to give it some more time, she is still very new. And yes, its a lovely name!!

I think Emmie is a lovely name. cute when she is young, cool when she is a teen, and suits an adult too. and But only you can decide whether you can really live with it.

I only know one Emmie and she is a very elegant woman. Definitely not a chav!

I was imagining all sorts of names, but Emmie, is lovely!!!!

It's not "chavvy" at all. Personally, I would think it might be short for something else (I might even ask you) but if you told me it wasn't I would still think it a really lovely name.

I was never 100% about DD's name...for lots of reasons. 8 years on I'm still not convinced, but all the names which would have really suited her, DH didn't like at all.

But, yes, you have a year to change your mind.
