Girls names - no abbreviations!

Any suggestions for girls names that can't be abbreviated?! I really like Isabella but hate the idea of people abbreviating it to Izzie. DH and I have people abbreviate our names all the time and hate it!

At the minute we also like Alice (praying no one calls them Ali) and Imogen.

Faith is a lovely name. If you don't want people to abbreviate a name then I think you just have to be honest with people and tell them not to. I remember my Mum telling off my brother's teachers for shortening his name. It's a name that people will naturally shorten but with my mum being so insistent, nobody did it. He is now 22 and does shorten his name but only because he wants to, not because it suits other people. My name can't be shortened at all but still people would try calling me Caz, there is no z in my name!

My mother was called Clare because my grandmother hated shortenings. My grandfather then called her Clarabella/Bella/Bella Bee/Bee! Generally I'd say it was fairly safe for nicknames though.

I've a long very unusual name with a common shortening, my mother told people she didn't like the shortening when I was little, and then I told them the same when I was older. Apart from a short period in my teens when I was desperate for a nickname I have always been known by my full name. I don't respond to the shortening, so people generally don't try more than once! I could see it might be much harder if you have a name where people automatically go for the nick name, like Victoria/Vicky, Deborah/Debbie etc.

My neice is called Imogen - and is known as Jenny (so multiple ways to abbreviate).
Names I've come across that don't seem to get shortened (although some are already abbreviations of longer names):
Ann, Carly, Fran, Hannah, Gail, Jane, Jill, Kate, Lucy, Mae, Naomi, Petra, Ria, Sarah, Tina, Wendy, Yvonne.

I know a Lauren who is nn lol or lolly.

And with short names, people will lengthen them eg Ruth to Ruthie.

My mum gave me a name she thought couldn't be abbreviated. She was very wrong.

Faith is lovely! But whatever you choose just to bear in mind that further down the line no matter what the original name is someone somewhere finds a nn that your child may like answer too which YOU might not like! Some names actually get lengthened as a nick name! I speak from experience!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I won't make it the most important thing. Would just be such a bonus for DH and I. I suppose I shoud have just said names that can't be abbreviated easily!

No matter what you do, or don't do, nicknames and shorthand will ALWAYS be found.

Just pick a name you like and stop hypothetically worrying about what nickname someone might or might not give her in the future

FWIW I love that people shorten my name and I'm slightly sad the name we picked for DD, which we love otherwise, can't be shortened!

Also, a cautionary tale, MIL gave DP a name which can't be shortened because, like you she doesn't like it. He was given a nickname by friends when he was young which is unrealted to the name MIL gave him, and as an adult everybody knows him by his nickname! Only MIL calls him his given name.

Of course you should chose a name you love and if this is an important criteria for you then stick to your guns, but I wouldn't make it the most important thing if you find a name you love that can be shortened.

Impossible, as if people don't shorten it they lengthen it.

I know a Jack known as Jackie, a Jordan known as Joe and a Jo known as Joey.

I have a Leah and nobody ever shortens it. I was worried she might get Lee when she went to school but it never happened and she has got to the age of 9 so far with everyone using her proper name.

DD is Catrin, I've only heard one person shorten it to Cat and that was last week, (we do call her kit kat at home as a pet name though).
