NNs for William?

DC1 due in 7 weeks....DH has fallen in love with William for a boy. I quite like it, but think its a bit grown up sounding for a baby/toddler so would like a nn option. Only I really don't like Billy - are there any others you can think of as I'm drawing a blank!

TIA Smile

My great uncle was uncle Beam. Short for William. Never heard of it before or since but I think it was because there was so many Williams in that family and they had run out of nicknames! Possibly it's a mixture of Bill and Liam. Very cute for a cheerful toddler though

I think will sounds much older than William.

blueamber it is always mentioned on MN when the discussion about the name William come up, that he will be teased and called 'Willy'.

With my DS William, now 17, (he always introduces himself as Will), he was called Willy at school for about 2 weeks when he was about 14, laughed it off, and that was that, everyone reverted back to normal. It was absolutely not a problem, probably helped because he just found it quite funny. It was exasperated in his case as well as he had a friend called Richard and they were called 'Willy and Dick', but as I said for probably less than a fortnight.

For anyone considering this name, I really wouldn't let that put you off. It's a great name Smile

Reality, I love bilbo as a nickname!

I like the name William, but won't they get teased as willy?

Wow I didn't realise this was still going! Thanks for all the responses, I think you've pretty much convinced me that "just William" is fine for a baby/toddler - and I'm sure we'll end up with a couple of the more offbeat nn's ourselves as well Grin

That's boy and girl names decided then - eek!

My sisters boy is called William - he is 8 now.

It suited him as a baby and suits him now Smile
He has a few little pet names (Willbo) but in general everyone just calls him William.

It may be that as he gets older he might want to be known by Will (or some other shorthand name) but he will always be William to his family.

It's a great name!!!

DS has a 3yo friend at nursery called Bill. Before I met him it sounded odd for a toddler but now he's just Bill Grin

Our William is Will, Willibob, Will-I-Am (I hate that one but it comes out sometimes!), Wilfred, Wilhelm, and occasionally Señor Milkychops (blame DH for that one! Grin). He's 10 months.

I have a Will known as Will, Wills, Wilbur and Bob. Grin

Plus a lot of other random NN's that have nothing to do with his actual name.

I have a William and we've never used a nickname. Some of the children at school have started to call him Will.

I also don't like Billy.

My son's best friend is William, they're both 3 and a hal, everyone has always called him William, never a need for a nickname and its never seemed to old, perfectly suited him at all stages, newborn, toddler, little boy. I sometimes call him WillyBob! No idea why but mostly he's just William and its a lovely name

Thanks ladies, I guess Will could work, and like you say it will stick once you start calling it. Am loving all the bilbo variants too, very cute Smile

I quite like Will for a little baby, once you start calling him it, it will stick and it'll feel odd that you thought it wouldn't suit such a small child.

I am indeed. Keep trying to catch up. Today's my last day at work, so will hopefully be around a bit more Grin
