Baby names

Edith or Beth?

Was here recently asking between Edith and Sylvie but Dh having a change of heart.
We love both but Ds has a hugely popular, one syllable name and I worry that alongside 'Beth'..... Both being one syllable, it might sound a bit dull Confused
I know I'm over thinking but opinions welcome. TIA Smile

Sylvie is very pretty too. I think the original crop of little Ediths were because of Edith Bowman, her parents really were trend setters, almost of the bonkers variety - can you imagine being named Edith then? Would have been like me calling my 20 year old Bernard or Doris. Shock) then there was a little lull, and now Downton is responsible for a few more. I predict lots of little Sybills too. Gorgeous names.

Edith is utterly fantastic and everyone who doesn't call their DD1 Edith is clearly deluded.

Look, I realise Edith is now on the rise bloody Downton Abbey but mine is almost 5, and she gets a huge reaction to her name: "Edith! Wow, i've never met a little Edith but my Gran was Edith, it's a lovely name..." ALL THE TIME. So, you know. If that's what you're looking for!

But I also love Sylvie. Sylvie was on our shortlist, and is still on our shortlist for (potential) DD3. I know a Sylvie Winifred which I still think is just a fantastic name.

Startail Edith is most probably going to marry an Archie or an Alfie anyway. I like Edith, my Grandmother was called Edith/Edie but I don't expect my other Grandmother's name would make a comeback she was a Doris.

Startail
See.... I think it does work Confused
I met a handsome man in a bar like that called Barry when we were both in our 20's. I didn't judge him by his name for a second. Dh is not Barry but so what if he was?
Not using 'old lady' names really does rule out a lot. Loads have had come backs over the years and stuck: Lily, Lucy, Emily, Martha etc
Though I appreciate we all like different names Smile

Think Dh is going off Beth. He thinks its a bit 'nothing' now sadly and I'm really not a fan of Elizabeth at all. Do wish he'd come round to Meredith more though

Just picture the scene:

Beautiful young woman's eyes meet hanson young mans eyes across a crowed room.

They approach each other, they smile, they chat, nervously he asks, "What's your name?"

"Edith."

Unless his name is Stan or Norman, it just doesn't work.

BETH!!!!!

Edith is hideous, you can not possibly call your DD Edith.

Dominodonkey · 04/06/2013 23:48

then Edith is a fashionable faddy name- no one has been called it for 50 years but its in fashion now. It's not like names like Elizabeth or victoria that have been constantly around.
I don't like Edith at all by the way can't stand the fashion for old lady/man names at all.
Think Beth, sylvie and Meredith are all very nice though.

Beth's ok, but I LOVE Edith! Please use Edith! Grin

Re: the posters saying that it's an old-lady name, I'd rather use a classic name than one that's fashionable right now. Some of the popular names around now will date horribly in a few years.

I saw your thread and was going to throw Meredith into the mix. Can't believe people don't like it. I think its beautiful and love Merry as a nn.

Edith, Beth and Sylvie all lovely too. Glad I don't have to choose Smile.

Love your taste in names. DD1's middle name is Edith and now we're expecting DD2 we wish we'd kept it back as we'd love to use it as a first name! My auntie's name is Beth otherwise it would be on our list. I know a baby Sylvie, too, and we were very jealous our friend had thought of it before us!

All classic, beautiful, elegant, timeless names - you can't wrong :)

Edith, my late Grandmother was an Edith but always called Edie. She was great. In her youth she used to play the piano for the silent films in the cinema and once her village's first chip shop opened she never cooked again.

And Meredith sucks.

Edith. Beth is shortened version of other names. Classy and strong...go for it.

Two people today have asked me today what names we're thinking of, one was giddy with joy at the thought of a little Edith but the the other looked astonished Grin
Just shows...... They were about 20 years apart in age though Smile

Met a lovely pensioner Edith yesterday. It is a very sweet name. But Beth is lovely too. I would go. For Edith though.

Beth, definitely. I really dislike Edith; it's still an old-woman name to me and the long "Eee" sound isn't very euphonious (IMO, obviously).

Beth, perhaps as nickname for Bethany
